It was widely assumed that pre-orders for Tesla’s recently announced Model 3 would be impressive, but no one could have foreseen what has transpired over the last two days.
During Tesla’s special event this past Thursday, you might remember Elon Musk touting that the company had already secured over 115,000 Model 3 reservations from customers who hadn’t yet even seen the car. Not even 48 hours later, reservations for Tesla’s upcoming EV have already surpassed 253,000.

Hardly a point of speculation, the figure come from none other than Musk himself who sent out the following tweet just a short while ago.

In effect, the $7,500 federal tax subsidy is all used up, which is to say customers who didn’t get their reservation in on day one are likely out of luck.
With demand for the Model 3 presumably surpassing even Tesla’s wildest expectations, Musk also indicated via Twitter that he may have to completely rethink the company’s production plans.
“Definitely going to need to rethink production planning,” Musk said on Friday morning.
As for impending reservation updates, Musk said that he’ll provide another update later tonight followed by one final update next Wednesday.
