The new Surface Book is more powerful than any MacBook

Microsoft Event

When Microsoft announced the Surface Book last year, it was the most powerful thin laptop on the market. Forget the detachable screen, Microsoft managed to fit a discrete graphics card in something thinner than a 13-inch MacBook Pro.

This year, things are getting better. Microsoft has left the outside of the Surface Book the same, but it’s “doubled” the graphics capability and added a bunch more battery.

DON’T MISS: From the outside, nothing is different with the Surface Book gen 2. It’s the same detachable screen, all-aluminum design with that weird hinge. But inside, it looks like Microsoft has added a new GPU. It’s not an off-the-shelf unit — nothing is thin enough to fit inside the Surface Book — but discrete graphics of any kind is a big step up.

Microsoft also claims that it’s added 30 percent more battery life. Hopefully, it hasn’t done a Samsung and bitten off more than it can chew.

The new Surface Book with extra graphics arrives this month for $2,400, while the lower-spec, no-GPU version with a Core i5 remains $1,500.
