A new report from Digitimes claims that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 7 will come with 3GB of RAM as opposed to the 2GB currently found on the iPhone 6s. While the report doesn’t indicate whether both iPhone 7 models or just the iPhone 7 Plus model will enjoy the modest yet much-appreciated boost in memory, it stands to reason that only Apple’s 5.5-inch iPhone 7 model will be graced with more RAM.
For starters, Apple is notoriously stingy with respect to components like RAM, the company’s long-time allegiance to 16GB of storage being a perfect example. That being the case, Apple has a tendency to only add pricier components into its pricier devices. Second, and perhaps more importantly, rumors surrounding the iPhone 7 Plus’ camera suggest that it will need more memory in order to operate as intended.

Remember, rumors that Apple is planning to add more RAM to at least one of their iPhone 7 models have been floating around for quite a few months now. This past May, reputed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo issued a research note indicating that the iPhone 7 Pro will come with 3GB of RAM in order to meet the technical requirements that the device’s advanced new camera system demands. As we’ve covered previously, it’s largely believed that the iPhone 7 Pro will come with an advanced dual camera system based on technology Apple picked up via its 2014 acquisition of LinX.
Before being acquired by Apple, LinX boasted that it was leading the way in providing “DSLR performance in slim handsets.” What’s more, the company’s camera technology claimed to deliver superior camera performance across a number of different metrics, including much improved photo quality in low light environments, improved color fidelity, decreased noise levels and more.
It’s also worth referencing a comment that John Gruber of Daring Fireball made this past November in regards to the iPhone 7.
“I don’t even know what sense this makes,” Gruber said during his Talk Show podcast, “but I’ve heard that it’s some kind of weird two-lens system where the back camera uses two lenses and it somehow takes it up into DSLR quality imagery.”
Intriguing to say the least.
By all accounts, the iPhone 7 Plus will represent a significant leap forward in mobile camera technology, thus lending credence to the idea that it will in fact be bestowed with 3GB of RAM.
