Time Warner Cable warns customers that 320,000 accounts may be compromised

On Wednesday, Time Warner Cable said that up to 320,000 customers may have had their account information stolen.

According to a report from Reuters, email and password details were likely taken from the cable and internet provider via malware downloaded during a phishing attack or possibly through a third-party data breach of another company with access to TWC customer data.

Although the company has not determined exactly how the data was stolen, it says that there is no indication that the Time Warner Cable systems were breached during the attack.

A TWC spokesman told Reuters that the FBI notified the provider that some customers’ email addresses and account passwords “may have been compromised.” In response, TWC is currently sending out email and direct mail notifications in order to tell customers to update their email passwords, even if there has been no evidence of an attack so far.

Speaking with NBC News, Time Warner Cable apparently indicated that the FBI warning was part of a broader disclosure which included other ISPs as well. There have been no further reports regarding other U.S. service providers, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for any more news in the coming days.

In the meantime, if you subscribe to TWC, you might want to change some passwords.
