In a financial report released on Thursday, Sony announced that it has now sold over 22.3 million PlayStation 4 units worldwide. In the last 12 months alone, Sony moved 14.8 million PS4s, which has in turn been a major contributing factor behind the company’s surprising financial recovery.

Sony says that sales in its Game & Network Services segment increased 33% year-over-year, making it the biggest revenue provider for the company over all.

“This significant increase was primarily due to an increase in PS4 hardware unit sales, a significant increase in network services revenue, the impact of foreign exchange rates and an increase in PS4 software sales, partially offset by a decrease in PlayStation®3 (“PS3”) hardware and PS3 software sales.”

So even with the thunderous success of the PS4, the inevitable downturn of Sony’s PS3 business has understandably offset the improvement, along with the disappointments that are the PS TV and PS Vita in the international market.

Of course, it won’t matter how Sony’s secondary gaming ventures perform if the company can move an expected 16 million PS4 units throughout the fiscal year of 2015.
