No matter how technologically advanced we are, we keep discovering wondrous and frightening new forms of life. Just recently, a team of scientists discovered some new species of fish inside some volcanoes in Australia that are super tiny, but also incredibly scary.

According to CSIRO News, the 50-million-year-old inactive volcanoes were found some 200 kilometers off the coast of Sydney as researchers were looking for the nursery grounds of larval lobster. UNSW marine biologist Professor Iain Suthers said the team also discovered a hotspot for lobster larvae and other tiny critters in a place they shouldn’t be present.

“We had thought fish only developed in coastal estuaries, and that once larvae were swept out to sea that was the end of them,” he said. “But, in fact, these eddies are nursery grounds for commercial fisheries along the east coast of Australia.”

As you can see in some of the following images, the fish have impressive jaws and teeth that seem to be out of place, especially considering their size. What are they even supposed to be hunting?

Furthermore, some of these species seem to have a potential stinger in their tails, just in case the sharp teeth aren’t enough to ensure survival.

Let’s just hope the “nightmare-inducing chauliodontidae,” as the Daily Mail calls the fish species, don’t have any significantly bigger brothers and sisters lurking around.
