Netflix’s stable of exclusive content is about to get bigger and better. The Internet streaming juggernaut announced this week that it plans to revive the BBC’s award winning nature documentary Planet Earth, a series which initially aired back in 2006. In case you’re unfamiliar, Planet Earth — the most expensive nature documentary ever produced — provided viewers an incredible and in-depth look at the world we live in, all in stunning HD.

Knowing a good thing when it sees it, Netflix recently ordered an 8-part documentary from the very creators of BBC’s Planet Earth, the same folks responsible for some other shows you’ve undoubtedly come across on The Discovery Channel, such as Frozen Planet and Blue Planet. And seeing as how Netflix will be pulling the purse strings, the show, already titled Our Planet, will be shot in Ultra HD 4K. For anyone who was enthralled with the breathtaking footage in Planet Earth, just imagine that type of video quality on steroids.

What’s more, the produces of Our Planet will be working with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) who will help provide them access to otherwise protected habitats. As the name of the series implies, Our Planet promises to take viewers to “never-before-filmed settings, ranging from the ice caps and deep ocean to deserts and remote forests, featuring some of the world’s rarest animals and most precious natural habitats.”
The series is expected to premiere some time in 2019 and will undoubtedly be a must-see 4K TV viewing experience.
