Slow motion video can capture a lot of cool things but you still need to have a really awesome slo-mo camera to faithfully capture what a bullet really looks like when it’s fired from a pistol. The team at MythBusters recently did just that by filming a pistol being fired at an insane 73,000 frames per second.

“Adam Savage is nearly rendered speechless by incredible slo-mo footage that captures a bullet being fired at 73,000 frames per second,” The Discovery Channel writes on its YouTube page. “Shot at these speeds, the video reveals a dance of pressure and fire that would otherwise be missed by the unaided eye.”
As you can see in the screencap at the top of the page, a symmetrical globe of smoke erupts out of the pistol as the bullet emerges and heads inexorably toward its target. For something so potentially lethal, it has a certain beauty to it that can’t be denied.
“I had no idea it would be that lovely, I have to go back and watch it again,” Savage says during the video.
