Instagram CEO: Android app on the way

December 7th, 2011 at 7:30 PM

Speaking during the LeWeb conference in Paris on Wednesday, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom confirmed that an Android version of the company’s popular iOS application is in the works. “We have two people working on Android now,” Systrom told LeWeb attendees, neglecting to discuss a release timeframe. Systrom also said he plans to inject advertising into the photo sharing application to create a revenue stream. “I think the advertising experience is going to be extremely engaging,” Systrom explained, according to a report by CNET. “Instagram offers photos, and brand names such as Audi, Kate Spade, and Burberry have joined Instagram.” The brands are all sharing pictures of current products and users can subscribe to view each company’s photo stream. “Our focus now is on growing the network. You really need to build up the network, or no advertisers care,” Systrom said. Instagram will no doubt face competition from competing options on Android such as Path, which recently launched an entirely revamped product that allows users to share where they are, what they are doing and photos in a clean, streamlined format.
