Android users aren’t the only ones to reap the benefits of Google’s gorgeous new Material Design. On Thursday, a fresh coat of paint was applied to Google Maps on iOS as well, giving iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users a taste of what Android 5.0 Lollipop is going to offer in the coming months. iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users will be especially pleased with the iOS 8 optimization, shrinking the UI elements at the top of the screen to their appropriate size.

These are the official patch notes for the 4.0.0 update which appeared in the App Store on Thursday:

  • New Material Design brings bold graphics, fluid motion, and tactile surfaces
  • Make a restaurant reservation right from the app (U.S. only)
  • See estimated wait time and cost of taking an Uber, if you have the app installed
  • Optimized for iOS 8
  • Bug fixes

The update should begin downloading automatically if you have Google Maps installed on your iOS device, but if not, head the the App Store and update it manually. We can only hope that Material Design will continue to trickle down into the App Store in the future.
