Team behind Google’s Inbox app explains what makes it so incredible

Do you like what you’ve seen with Google’s new Inbox app so far? If so, that’s a good thing because Google thinks its the future of Gmail. In an interview with Mashable, the team behind Inbox explain what they’re trying to accomplish with the new app and why they believe the traditional email inbox desperately needs a renovation.

The big trick with Inbox is that it’s trying to not just give you your messages in chronological order as Gmail has long done, but to use relevant data to figure out which messages are actually important to you and deserve priority, even if they arrived long before your newest messages popped up.

Google also wants to make it easier to take the actions you need to deal with each email easier so you don’t have to open up each individual message — so for example, if you receive a low-content message that is mostly full of vacation pictures, Inbox will display thumbnails of the pictures below the subject header. Furthermore, Inbox gives you the ability to pin important, time-sensitive messages at the top of your inbox as special reminders that you need to do something while also giving you the option to “snooze” them for a certain time before they pop back up.

“We think this is the inbox designed for the problems we’re going to see in the next 10 years, and that’s how we’re going to build on this,” Inbox product director Alex Gawley tells Mashable. “We also know there’s a whole bunch of things that people are doing inside Gmail that we want them to be continuing to be able to do as well. We hope, in the long run, that most of our users will be on Inbox.”
