Sony announced on Tuesday that PlayStation 4 sales have passed 18.5 million units as of January 4th, a huge jump from the 13.5 million of late October. This is especially good news for the Japanese corporation considering the fact that the Xbox One finally jumped the PS4 in November, potentially indicating that the unprecedented interest in Sony’s console was beginning to die down.

The news should also come as a sigh of relief for Sony after the company was hacked on Christmas Day, taking the PlayStation Network offline and giving new PS4 owners cause for concern. Other divisions of the company have to be pleased with the results as well, as Sony suffered yet another net loss in 2014.

Following a heavily advertised price drop and the launches of several new bundles, the Xbox One has finally returned to its regular price of $399.99, and the two consoles should be back on a level playing field for the rest of the year. We won’t know for sure until Microsoft releases its own sales numbers for the holiday season, but based on the most recent reports, the two were likely neck and neck throughout December.

We’ll know more when the official NPD report for January is released later this month.
