In less than a week, we’ll finally know more about the next wave of Pokemon coming to Pokemon Go. Amid a wave of leaks and rumors, Niantic took to the official Pokemon Go Facebook page on Wednesday to announce that it would have more to say about new Pokemon coming to the popular app (Legendaries? Generation 2?) on Monday, December 12th.
DON’T MISS: Pokemon Go just got a new update, but it’s not the exciting release you wanted
In addition to the announcement (which may or may not coincide with a certain sponsored event at Starbucks), Niantic also says that it has “a few new experiences and in-game events planned” before the end of 2016. We’re already waiting for the update that the team announced this morning to roll out, but it sounds like the highly-anticipated Christmas event is in the works as well.
Based on the wording of the post, it doesn’t sound like we’ll actually be able to catch all 100 new Pokemon on December 12th, but considering the fact that the sprites for those creatures are already in the game, it’s not altogether impossible.
While the new Pokemon are obviously the highlight of today’s announcement of an announcement, Niantic also revealed that it is working with Sprint to turn over 10,500 Sprint, Boost Mobile and Sprint at Radioshack stores into PokeStops and Gyms. Sprint locations will also feature in-store charging stations for trainers to charge their phones, regardless of whether or not they subscribe to Sprint.
If you’re still playing Pokemon Go, or have been tempted to jump back in, the next few weeks are going to be some of the most exciting since the game launched this summer. We’ll be keeping an eye out for more information.
UPDATE: During a conference call regarding the collaboration, Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure said that he is excited to be a part of the launch of “the next generation” of Pokemon Go, and specifically referred to “Gen 2,” which Niantic didn’t mention in its release. When asked about the Generation 2 comment, Niantic CEO John Hanke said that new Pokemon will begin to roll out on December 12th, but that not all of the new Pokemon will be available on that day.
