President Donald Trump’s first two weeks in office have been tumultuous, to say the least. The biggest question ahead of the president’s inauguration last month was just how literal Trump was on his historical campaign trail. While many who voted against Trump were afraid that the radical ideas he often proposed were in fact an accurate representation of his intentions, many supporters seemed to be operating under the impression that Trump would relax a bit if he did indeed end up taking office. For example, billionaire Trump supporter Peter Thiel famously said that voters should “take Trump seriously but not literally.”
The country and the world have now quickly learned that much of Trump’s rhetoric was indeed to be taken literally, and his recent immigration ban is by far the new president’s most controversial move to date. Now, in the latest chapter of this saga, 97 companies including some of the biggest names in tech have banded together to file a legal brief in opposition of Trump’s executive order on immigration.
In an amicus brief filed late on Sunday in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, 97 companies clearly stated their opposition to Trump’s controversial executive order, which bars refugees and valid visa holders from seven Muslim countries from entering the United States. A US District judge temporarily lifted the immigration ban late on Friday night, but Trump and his staffers have already stated their intention to fight the judge’s decision.
Apple, Google, Facebook, Spotify, Airbnb, Citrix, eBay, Etsy, Intel, Microsoft, Netflix, Snap, Twitter and Uber are just some of the high-profile companies that participated in filing the brief, the goal of which is to make clear that the technology industry and American businesses in general oppose Trump’s ban.
“Immigrants make many of the Nation’s greatest discoveries, and create some of the country’s most innovative and iconic companies,” the brief stated. “America has long recognized the importance of protecting ourselves against those who would do us harm. But it has done so while maintaining our fundamental commitment to welcoming immigrants—through increased background checks and other controls on people seeking to enter our country.”
The brief can be seen in its entirety at this link, and the complete list of 97 companies responsible for the filing can be seen below.
