Google engineer shows off Android Wear smartwatch notifications for the first time

Google sat back for a short while and watched companies like Sony, Motorola and Samsung launch Android-based smartwatches that reminded us a lot of early Android tablets — they were half-baked and rushed to market. Then, Google decided to take matters into its own hands and build a special version of Android designed specifically for wearable devices.

Android Wear already looks promising, thanks mostly to the gorgeous Moto 360 smartwatch set to launch in the coming months. We’ve had a few brief looks at the platform so far, and now a Google engineer has shared images of Android Wear’s notifications system for the first time.

“One of the coolest parts of Android Wear is how it extends the Android platform to a new generation of devices out of the box, without any need to update your app. If you have a notification-enabled app, those notifications will generally just work on your new wearable,” Google’s Timothy Jordan wrote on the Android Developers Google+ page.

He continued, “It’s striking how useful these notifications are and easy to imagine how much more valuable they could get with a little bit of additional development. With just a few lines of code you can deliver even richer experiences on the wearable by using stacks, pages, and voice replies.”
