When it comes the cost of living, few places in the world are as expensive as New York City, a place where a tiny studio can sometimes run as high as $2,000 per month.

In turn, Airbnb, not surprisingly, has become exceedingly popular service in the Big Apple. Not only is New York City a top-flight tourist destination, but the high cost of living there incentivizes New Yorkers — perhaps more so than in other cities — to put their places up on Airbnb for a little bit of extra cash each month.

But just how much do New Yorkers make, on average from the popular apartment and house sharing site? Not a point of speculation anymore, Airbnb has given us some cold hard data to play around with.

According to the company, the average Airbnb host in New York City earns approximately $5,474 from the service on a 12-month basis. All in all, that’s not too shabby for hosts who only make their residences available to guests sporadically throughout the year.

Of course, the average revenue figure tends to fluctuate depending on what part of the city and which borough within New York an Airbnb host happens to reside in.

“That median income differs neighborhood by neighborhood,” Business Insider writes. “Those in Midtown Manhattan earn $8,286 from Airbnb, while hosts in Queens are earning about $4,100 in one year.”

As far as where the most number of listings can be found, Brooklyn has 6,492 Airbnb hosts while Midtown Manhattan has 2,492 hosts. Areas in Manhattan outside of Midtown have approximately 8,763 host locations.

Incidentally, there have recently been a number of reports indicating that many of New York City’s Airbnb listings may be technically illegal.

As a final point of interest, the cities where Airbnb hosts can earn the most money in the U.S. are exactly where you would expect: New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
