It wasn’t long ago that fans of Deadpool were all but certain that the sarcastic, abrasive superhero would never hit the big screen. Now, just days before the movie’s highly anticipated premiere, The Hollywood Reporter has received word that a sequel is already in the works.

Speaking to insiders, THR is reporting that Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers behind Deadpool, are already hard at work on a script for the sequel.

Even with its relatively small budget and an unfamiliar lead character, Deadpool is apparently expected to make upwards of $70 million over the coming weekend, which explains why Fox is so desperate to get another out the door ASAP.

Director Tim Miller reportedly hasn’t signed on for another movie in the franchise yet, but sources say that Fox is “intent on keeping the creative team together.”

Ryan Reynolds told FILMSTARTS in an interview this week that X-Force (an X-Men spinoff team from the Marvel universe with Deadpool in a prominent role) would be his priority “if we’re doing a bunch more Deadpool movies.” A bunch more is a tall order for a movie that hasn’t even released yet, but it looks like this isn’t the last we’ll be seeing of the Merc with a Mouth.

Deadpool will release in theaters on February 12th, 2016.
