If you were hoping that Apple’s upcoming big Apple TV refresh would include support for the latest and greatest high-definition content, we have bad news for you. In a new report from reliable Apple reporter John Paczkowski, who now writes at BuzzFeed, Apple’s upcoming next-generation Apple TV will not include support for 4K “ultra HD” video content.

Will anyone care? That remains to be seen.

“Sources in position to know” have told BuzzFeed that the new Apple TV currently in development at Apple will not stream the latest high-definition video content currently offered by Netflix and other streaming video providers. According to the site’s sources, the market for 4K video isn’t yet significant enough for Apple to support it.

While there is little question that 4K video quality is vastly superior to regular HD, there is also little question that Ultra HDTVs that support the new higher-quality video have yet to proliferate.

Cost is still a big barrier for 4K TV adoption in most cases, and most video content is not yet available in ultra HD resolution. This obviously makes the high cost of entry an even bigger barrier.

Apple’s next-generation Apple TV is reportedly set to be unveiled this coming June during Apple’s annual WWDC developers conference in California.
