U.S. broadcasters and brands have done a phenomenal job over the years of making TV commercials aired during the Super Bowl as much of a staple for TV viewers as the big game itself. Considering how hated TV ads are in just about any other context, this was no easy feat. Super Bowl XLVIII featured its fair share of gems and duds this year, as is the case every year, but Hulu has separated the cream of the crop from the rest and compiled the top-5 ads of this year’s Super Bowl.

Ads are ranked based on the number of votes each spot received in Hulu’s “AdZone,” where Hulu subscribers go to compare and vote on TV commercials.

While each of the top-5 ads in this year’s rankings comes from a company known for its commercials during the Super Bowl, an interesting theme has emerged this year. While the No.’s 5 and 4 spots are occupied by upbeat commercials, the top-3 are all heartfelt tear-jerkers. Perhaps most of the voting was being done by crestfallen Broncos fans who were happy to have something other than the game itself to blame their tears on.

All five TV commercials are embedded below, though our pick for the best ad of Super Bowl XLVIII — Microsoft’s “Empowered” ad — is absent from the list.
