Microsoft says Windows Phone is beating iPhone in 24 markets

Microsoft Windows Phone Sales

Here’s some more evidence that 2014 is shaping up to be Windows Phone’s breakthrough year. Per Neowin, Microsoft has released a statement this week claiming that Windows Phone devices have out-shipped Apple’s iPhone in 24 markets, including Italy, Finland, Poland, India, South Africa and Nigeria.

What’s notable about the markets listed is that most of them are emerging markets where the high-priced iPhone has more limited appeal. This jives well with what we’ve been reading about the very strong sales of the Nokia Lumia 520 and 521 models, which are budget smartphones that Microsoft has been pushing aggressively in emerging markets.

Microsoft still has a long way to go in more mature markets where the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy devices are well established as the top players, of course, but this is still welcome news for a company that one year ago was really struggling to make gains in the mobile market.
