Google on Monday evening unveiled a slightly redesigned new version of its Google Glass Explorer Edition connected eyewear… and it doesn’t help. In fact, if anything, the new changes probably look even geekier than before. Google recently announced a new run of its $1,500 Explorer Edition Glass, and now we finally get to see what the slightly tweaked build looks like. For those hoping it might offer some key design changes that make it less geektastic, no such luck. Instead, Glass gets a bit bulkier when taking into account the removable earbud that is sure to make any wearer the belle of the ball. No other design changes have been made, aside from minor tweaks that accommodate a new line of prescription frames.

Look, we already know that Google Glass is no iPad, but the hope for those who believe there’s a future in connected eyewear is that Glass will be a stepping stone that launches the category and encourages companies to work toward designs that are more, shall we say, socially acceptable. In the meantime, Glass will likely remain a niche product, and that niche will be quite small.

Glass will launch to the general public sometime next year and in the meantime, another image of Google’s redesigned headset follows below.

Updated to clarify that the earbud plugs into the microUSB port and is removable, and that no major design changes were made in the new Explorer build.
