iOS developers said to earn more from app sales than Google makes from its mobile business

Business

Developers who build and sell apps for Apple’s iOS platform will collectively earn more money over the next year than Google will earn from its entire mobile business. Following Google’s third-quarter earnings report last week, David Barnard, founder of App Cubby, posted an interesting observation on his company’s blog. Google reported a run rate of $2.5 billion for its mobile ad revenue based on third-quarter earnings, up from $1 billion a year earlier. While that growth is impressive, Barnard noted that Apple paid developers about $500 million during the 89 days between July 7th and October 4th for a run rate of $2 billion. Add to that the money third-party ad networks like Milennial Media and Admob pay out to iOS developers over the course of a year, and “the iOS developer run rate is likely higher, maybe even significantly higher, than Google’s mobile run rate.”

Was this an article about 3rd party developers or Google employees? It’s ok. I’ll answer for you. It’s about 3rd party developers. Next time don’t make it so easy for me to make you look as stupid as you are! LOL

      • http://profiles.google.com/the1aboveall James Padilla

What are you retarded or really retarded?  Wait you wouldn’t know it if you were.  Go back under the bridge troll and get cancer.  Enjoy.

Of course they earn more money. It is not open as Android remember? In fact.. Android Market has a lot more free apps than the App Store.. even though the overall number is fewer.
Everybody knows Apple will squeeze every last penny out of you the consumer.

    • Anonymous

How is it Apple squeezing the consumer when it is the developer that sets its own prices?

      • Anonymous

developers set the price to offset the huge chunk that they have to cough out to apple.

      • Anonymous

yet there are many of the same apps costing more on Android, and there are plenty of non fart apps that are free on iOS. Why do people feel the need to spread hyperbole in the comment sections of every article about both platforms?

      • bluegreen

That makes no sense at all you troll. Free is free. Developers like to eat too, ya know?

      • Anonymous

Which is to run the damn App Store son. Hosting, distributing, verifying all those apps isn’t cheap. Apple makes barely any money from the iTunes ecosystem. And as a developer, don’t talk about things you don’t know.

      • numetheus

So what you’re saying is …. developers are setting high prices to offset the huge chunk that Apple is charging developers. So this means by extension, that the Android versions of the same app are price gouging us because they don’t have to pay Google the same chunk? Every pay Android app is overpriced because the developers are pocketing more money? You’re logic is crap. Please think about it more.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, 99/yr and 30% revenue sharing sure is steep… Those poor developers!

  • Anonymous

If google would charge manufacturers for using android I’m sure it would be a different story. Also, as an iPhone owner I have owned android too and I know that some apps cost more on android I don’t know why. I do know that there’s more piracy on android because you can just install the apk from The Internet.

    • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

It is called sideloading. I personally enjoy this feature because I run my phones rooted. With the ability to sideload all of my apps I don’t have to waste time downloading every single one of them everytime I jump to a different rom. I can simply batch back them up and then batch restore.

With that said, all you have to do is jailbreak your iPhone and you can get free apps too. Piracy exists on any and every OS.

      • Anonymous

Yes I know I’m jailbroken myself. But Many people are scared of jailbreaking because it will void they’re warranty or are scared of messing up they’re phone. I In the past have had buttons stop working so I just do a restore and AppleCare gives me a new phone.

      • IPwn

Doesn’t google automatically redownload your apps when you log into your google account?

Your point is valid, piracy is on every OS even crackberries

      • Anonymous

Very true, but the act of jail breaking alone doesn’t get you access to pirated Apps, there is more involved to it than that and it is much more of a hassle to deal with pirated apps and keeping them updated.

      • numetheus

You are a loser if you look forward to battling people in a tech forum. This isn’t pokemon numbnuts.

  • http://twitter.com/tiroger Roger Lefort

And lemonade stands make more money than Google’s juice business, so what? What’s the point of this article?

    • http://twitter.com/Everlong44 S.C.

If it was the other way around, you wouldn’t be saying this. I don’t understand why the cool thing to do these days is to hate Apple…

      • Carmen

Because it’s the biggest company in the world and people love to hate the one on top. No one likes their boss. No one liked their king, so on and so-forth.

      • numetheus

It is primarily by Android trolls who blindly follow anything with a green robot. For the most part, they are mindless trolls who can’t stand it when people have opinions that differ from theirs. iOS is fantastic and has advantages over Android. Android is fantastic and has advantages over iOS. Different people use their phone different ways and see benefit from both sides. It makes neither side stupid. They can live side by side. But alas, bring on the mindless Android trolls.

  • Satya Chowdary

shame on you BGR for being so openly sold to apple…

    • Anonymous

So sites like AndroidWorld, or Blackberry World, are also bad because they are pro- their product???

      • Anonymous

So you’re admitting that BGR is an Apple fan site? Check. Moving on.

Oh BTW Goofan, you’re a big phag.

  • Anonymous

no kidding! the only thing you get for free at “the app store” are fart apps.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, because android market has absolutely none of those! Thiet market isn’t filled with shitty wallpaper applications and soundboards, either! Right!?

    • Anonymous

The majority of apps are 99 cents.

      Yep, pretty steep.

  • Anonymous

And BlackBerry Devs make more than them all.

    • Anonymous

Really?  Probably because the apps are really shitty and don’t cost anything to make and there’s 3 total apps in the store???

      • Anonymous

No, there’s only 2 if you count the ones that actually work.

  • jacob moore

this isn’t surprising considering people who buy apple love spending money on itunes ( i have a mac mini, don’t use i tunes), plus the amount of ipads, iphones, and ipods sold, it doesn’t seem to crazy at all.

  • Lee Cormac

Was BGR purchased by Apple? I’m just sayin’ …

Love your post. I’m a huge fan.

So let me get this straight? Google who earns 30% of the revenue on Android is less then 70% commission that developers earn on iOS?

I think you should change the title to: This just in, 7 > 3

I mean this is common sense, for Google to be earning more then the developers on iOS would require Android to sell 3x more Android devices then iOS devices.

    • Anonymous

This is referring to Google’s mobile AD business and comparing it to the revenue generated by app developers.

      • Anonymous

Where do you think mobile ads come from? The mobile ads are on free apps and Google shares revenue with publishers. So that makes it even worse of a case for this article.
