Apple close to deals for iCloud movie streaming

General

Apple is reportedly close to inking deals with major movie studios that would allow the Cupertino-based company to stream movies to its iOS devices and PCs via iCloud. Los Angeles Times on Wednesday reported that Apple has been meeting with movie studios and is currently closing licensing deals that will allow its customers to purchase movies through iTunes and then stream them from iCloud to mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad, or even to Mac computers or Apple TV. The service would be similar to Hollywood’s just-launched UltraViolet product, though it would remove the requirement that customers purchase physical media before streaming content to their devices. The LA Times report states that Apple is expected to launch the service in late 2011 or early 2012.

Streaming movies in theory is awesome, but it drains battery so fast. Will this be available over 3g?

    • Anonymous

Yup the whole 3G data cap BS is the first thing I thought about. But how would this be a plus over downloading like it is now? Is this coming as a subscription service? I dont get it

Sounds like a netflix competitor if you ask me. No thanks.

Netflix is compressed before being delivered to a mobile phone, I am assuming the same would go for iCloud. I streamed a few movies over Netflix and it really didn’t do any damage to my data plan.

The whole point of it is to save drive space on your device. Who wants to put a 5GB HD movie on their 32GB device? Not me. You’d eat up your storage in no time.

why haven’t they banned you yet? Does anyone pay attention to these comments?

BGR doesn’t read the comments or even moderate them. They only take action when someone physically reports them. I got a ban warning email the other day from Zach himself.

Apple is king, Crapdroid is the court jester of the mobile kingdom.

LOL did you enjoy your 6 hour iOS 5 upgrade?

      • Thomas

No I haven’t upgraded yet. But its good to know that Apple actually updates their OS regularly, unlike crApDroid.

I’m running Gingerbread 2.3.7 currently which was just released two weeks ago. I got the update through my phone, like I always do, and it only took a matter of 10 minutes. Once you upgrade you’ll start to enjoy all of your new Android features.

PS: The last update the iPhone received was 11 months ago. That isn’t what I would call “regular.”

Grizzly, you seem some what educated and usually have decent arguments. But your fanboism is crazy. One, you have a nexus phone which is the only phones that get regular updates from google. Second, iOS is constantly updated adding new features and yes bug fixes. You were referring to the last major upgrade prior to yesterday’s. Example, 4.3 brought gestures and a new web kit for faster browsing and other enhancements. Go back to educated comments instead of trying to take the extreme stretch of the truth to make your points.

@368319004687df853351865584418d15:disqus I only own one Nexus device. I also own a Droid Incredible, Droid Bionic(let down), and a Droid Charge.

All of these phones are running Gingerbread. Yes, even my two year old Droid incredible is running Gingerbread straight from HTC.

With that said I wouldn’t consider a bug fix an update. I’m talking real updates, not fixing problems.

PS: I own an iPhone 4, no fanboyism here. Just being honest.

I know this will be very welcomed. There are days I wish I could just rent a movie from the Zune Marketplace and stream them. Can on the PC and Xbox, but it would be awesome to do so on the phone, or even though the browser.
