Microsoft exec: Windows Phone is the cure for iPhone’s monotony, Android’s chaos

mobile

Windows Phone boss Andy Lees sees the latest version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system as the answer to big problems facing iOS and Android, the two most popular mobile operating systems on the planet. In an interview with The Seattle Times, Lees pitched Windows Phone 7.5 — affectionately known as “Mango” — as the answer to consumers’ prayers. “Over the next 12, 18, 24 months, I can see a lot of stars lining up,” Lees said of Microsoft’s emerging mobile platform. Read on for more.

Where Google and Apple are failing, Microsoft is excelling according to Lees, Microsoft’s president of the Windows Phone division. Regarding the iPhone and iOS, Lees says Apple’s latest handset gives Microsoft a gap to fill. “I think, from an end user’s experience on the software, there’s a lot of interesting reviews written comparing us to iOS 5 and the amount that we’ve got done in 11 months — so some people (are) making comparisons of pace,” Lees responded when asked if Apple missed an opportunity with the iPhone 4S. He continued, “From a pure hardware perspective, I was surprised they’re not giving the consumer more choice. People want a variety of different things.”

Apple announced on Monday that pre-sales of the iPhone 4S totalled more than 1 million devices in the first 24 hours of availability.

Where Android is concerned, Lees suggests that the consistency of the Windows Phone experience is the answer to Android’s chaos. “I think Android is heading down this chaotic phase,” Lees said when The Seattle Times asked about the variety of Android devices heading into the holiday season. “We want to enable OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), we want to enable operators, but we don’t want chaos.”

“If you’ve used some of the (Android) phones, some of them are great, but some of them are not great,” the Windows Phone boss continued. “But it’s random. And it feels like, with some of them, that you’ve had several cooks in the kitchen trying to bake different things with the same thing. Whereas we have much more coherency in the totality of what somebody gets when they buy our phone.”

Lees also noted in the interview that we can expect Windows Phones covering a wide range of price points this holiday season, with some even reaching below the $100 mark. The executive confirmed that we can expect 4G Windows Phones in the near future as well.

Give me tether or give me Android!

    good luck with that!

People are sleeping on WP, and I find it rather discouraging. It’s a very innovative, no-nonsense, beautifully executed operating system. And the hardware standards are on point. I’m a fan of iOS and, to a lesser extent, Android, but I love WP. It’s like a comprise between the latter two.

I hear you.  To the people discounting it.  The OS speaks for itself.  instead of looking and bashing it, try it and see how cohesive the entire OS is.  It’s not about clicking another colorful icon it’s about tying everything together as seamless as possible.

I concur wholeheartedly. Cohesiveness is key.

I agree with you guys people are sleeping on WP.  One Example is how I like when listening to music you can see the next song in queue, the bands bio, additional songs and album for purchase and suggestions of similiar bands, all from the Music player, without having to exit out from your music player and entering itunes on your iOS and lets not get into Androids subpar music player experience.

WP7 is as monotonous as iO/S.

    Only uglier.

Wp7 has very old specs and are not for me

So, you base your smartphone purchases off of hardware specs?  Please tell me which specs are most important to you and why when considering a new phone…

      • Anonymous

Yes! Goofans (aka Apple Haters) ONLY care about SPECS.  And anyone that’s smart should also only care about SPECS. If all you do is care about SPECS, then every week you have a new phone/tablet.  Because every week someone comes out with better SPECS.  The beauty of free and open!

Choice isn’t something you provide for the sake of providing it; the idea is to offer something buyers want. Despite WP7s “choices,” no one’s buying. Meanwhile, 1 million 4S preorders in 24 hours.

It is easy for to talk big and claim your product will outsell other people product and beat all other product.  It is much different, and much harder, for to make it happen.

Everywhere I see Android phone, I see iPhone, but I do not see Windows phone…  Windows phone execs have big mouth, talk much, but I have yet to see their product receive wide popularity.

Why would they want to cure Android? They make more money from their bully tactics of making Sam and HTC pay them fees for selling Androids and iPhone will never die even if it doesn’t really change much for the next 5 more yrs. People just love their iPhones. I would too if not for the tiny screen -4.3 or nothing. Don’t whine about it being too big when the GS2 is barely bigger than the iPhone. iPhone just suffers from large bezels and less screen disease-side note. They need to find a cure for talking all the time about their plans and then taking so long to do anything. Their, and Apples real evil cure for Android is to sue them into oblivion and leave a WP 7 & Apple world. Leaving you in an uncustomizable matrix.

Clearly, iPhone has been selling more than any other individual phone, so his statement contradicts facts. MS should read up on the psychology of choice.

They aren’t giving much choice YET because they don’t want to release a half baked OS.. something they have updated more frequently in 8 months than android and ips in 2 years.. plus the new hardware will come.. I’ve owned several android handsets and phonies 3gs and 4 and what I hate about each is TERRIBLE battery life on androids and no different hardware on ips.. ie choice.. and for both the need to consistently use multiple apps for everything you do on the phone is a painful experience..

Remember when Microsoft had that “iPhone funeral” when WP7 came out?

Microsoft, do you like your crow baked or grilled?

Windows Phone is even more monotonous

      As is your comment.  sigh…

WP7, get some apps and you will attract more people… Mango is awesome, and FAST, even on a 1Ghz single core. Apps, we want apps.

I don’t know that any ‘tech’ site has more adamant cheerleaders and followers than this one. Disgust has actually turned into sympathy.

  • Gallison83

Haha… a topic about how Windows Phone compares to Android and iOS turns into bashing between Android and iOS and leaving WinPho out of the battle. I liken the argument this way: Mac OS X and Windows battle it out for who’s the best while Linux sits in a dark corner. Steady, reliable and unnoticed. Flash to mobiles: Android and iOS are picking at each other while WinPho sits there. Steady, reliable and unnoticed.

Just remember girls… you’re both pretty.

I think MS might be right – and WP might sell more than the 37 Zunes that MS sold.  WP might ultimately get into the triple digits.

But, it might be worth buying one now, because in a few decades they might have a great collector’s value, just like extremely rare/old comic books.

give me a break!…. windows mobile OS is the cure! lmao    sorry Microsoft but Google & Apple are the Top Dogs in mobile OS! and no matter what you say, do, advertise or how many money you spend on your mobile phone it just wont do…..  i will never use a windows phone! i ratter use iOS and i don’t think that will happen either………………………….. i’m 100% Google Android user

All this talk from a guy who could only convince Verizon to peddle one of his products…and that’s been out since the Spring!!!

How can I use a Windows phone w/out using stuff that’s in the cell phone world now antiquated?!?! Come on mane!!

    • BlarghBrah

Nobody wants to buy a WP7 from Verizon and nobody within Verizon wants to sell it, there’s literally no support for the device either, want anything for the phone well there’s nothing want some info on it well nobody cares enough to know anything. But hey im sure you guys will continue spewing out the “Mango will change everything” crap and well………….people will still only be buying Androids and Iphones so in the end its futile to support WP7

  • Yoyo

wait…..Windows phones still exist i wouldn’t have known as i don’t see ANYONE using them.

  • Jowek11

@YourFriendlySalesman   You can sync a Nexus with your itunes and Apple TV also.

  • Winski

You’re an idiot and the answer is -’ we don’t care’ ….it’s winders….

  • WTF?

Ahh… yes, let’s avoid the monotony of iOS stability with the freezes, crashes and virus attacks that personify anything windows based.

Who needs the choices that android provides its users? Let windoze make sure you have no surprises by only having microsoft software run properly on their phones… and when you are surprised, you can pay them extra for it (if you want your phone to run).
