HTC investigating potential Sense security flaw

mobile

A report was recently published by Android Police that suggests HTC’s Sense user interface has several major security flaws that provide HTC with access to SMS data, phone numbers, system logs, location information and much more. Worse, the flaw could potentially allow any third-party application to access the same private information without having permission from the user to do so. The security issue has been identified on the HTC ThunderBolt, EVO 4G and EVO 3D. “HTC takes our customers’ security very seriously, and we are working to investigate this claim as quickly as possible,” HTC said in a statement. “We will provide an update as soon as we’re able to determine the accuracy of the claim and what steps, if any, need to be taken.” HTC addressed a browser privacy issue in June and also commented on another report in early September which suggested the Sensation and EVO 3D were spying on users. HTC responded to the browser issue with a fix and said the “spying” allegations were a result of an HTC “opt-in” feature that allows HTC to collect data so that it can improve its phones.

welcome to the glittering realty of android security, using android is like standing naked with a paper tissue covering your vital parts and it is good as long you have a cool breeze but remember everyday is not as good as the previous one

Haters gotta hate. …Whatever makes you sleep well at night.

speaking the truth is not hating my dear friend. I know you are a brave man and good luck but I am just waiting for ATT to release the BB 9900 to ditch my Atrix, in the last 3 months at-least 100 security vulnerabilities might have cropped up on Android phones in some form or the other, in this week alone we have seen ATT Samsung II bypassing the screen-lock pass code and now HTC devices.

BB 9900 that’s the smartest thing I’ve seen posted on this site in ages.

While I don’t agree with “hundreds” of security issues, I do see your point. Not so much brave as aware.. aware that if I install a questionable app I am potentially opening myself up to attacks. Hopefully we can all catch up to BB security levels, but I am also aware enough to realize that *every* smartphone could have potential security issues.

This HTC thing is a bit scary tho, definitely agree there. Also, my OP was late at night after a long days work, so not a lot of thought went into it, haha.

Android users have already sold their information to Google. So why bother fixing?

I rooted my sensation and removed the htclogger apk from the system files. I understand what they’re trying to do but I’m opting out mmmmkay!

Here you go Androidnerds!  An Android related thread!  Post away!  Oh wait – you’d rather go in droves to the Apple threads complaining that there are not enough Android related threads.  Hypocrites.  You love Apple.

    • KCRic

      Cool story bro.

Maybe nobody is commenting because this issue is OLD. We’ve known about it for a week now and there’s already a fix for intelligent users. The rest have to wait.

      • Bringit

There could be a story about the iPhone 3 and Androidnerds would come running to post in it, mainly to bitch about too many Apple threads and wanting more Android threads.  But give the babies Android threads and they stay away.  Got it, bro?

        Is your butt hurt Bringit?

The sense UI was always fckd up to begin with there’s no need for a press conference or release statement at this point.
