Samsung to unveil U.S. Galaxy S II models on August 30th [updated]

Breaking

Samsung has begun sending event invitations to bloggers and members of the press for an event on August 29th where the South Korea-based vendor will unveil U.S. models of its popular Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone. The devices will be unveiled in New York City, and no other details from Samsung are available at this time. BGR exclusively reported earlier this month that Sprint’s version of the Galaxy S II would be called the Epic Touch 4G, and a purported Verizon Wireless roadmap suggested that the nation’s top carrier could release the sleek smartphone on September 9th as the Samsung Stratosphere, though other reports have suggested the Stratosphere is a different device that is not part of the Galaxy S II line. Versions are expected for both AT&T and T-Mobile as well, though details surrounding these devices have not yet been revealed. BGR reviewed the international version of the Galaxy S II back in May, and we found it to be one of our favorite Android smartphones to date at that time.

UPDATE: Due to the hurricane approaching the New York area, Samsung has pushed this event back one day to Tuesday, August 30th.

It’s gonna be a real bummer if there’s not a Verizon variant.

    • Guest

Looking like it.  I’m on Verizon but I can just see the other big 3 announcing variants except Verizon.

    why so soon?

    • Anonymous

The phone’s been out for five months everywhere else. I’m not sure what timescale you’re using where that would be “soon.”

      • Tommythall

        It’s called “sarcasm”.

Part of me wants to retort about how terrible most of the posters are here, and how somebody could totally say that, but… no.

        I pwnd myself.

    About freaking time!!!

Im guessing last minute changes by the carriers is what held up this event.

  • Bhaynes9

What providers are going to get this phone? I need a new phone bad and I’m waiting on this to hopefully come to T-Mobile.

    • Jjjjj

Guess you hane not seen the Hercules.

  • http://twitter.com/mbcls ask me

will apple be there trying to stop samsung from selling the phone?
WTF apple!  does your freaking idiotPhone has 4.27″ or 4.5 inches?
that is like mistaken a flat chested girl as my girl which has big boobs!

Except your girl is trashy and whorish. While the other is classy and respectable. :)

        Nobody wants a classy girl!

Everyone wants a girl who isn’t laggy.

Potential boyfriend: “What do you want to do tonight?”

        Sammie’s Girl: “Uhhhhhhhhh. Duhhhhhhhhh. . . .”

PB: “I thought you were fast and smooth, you know, like your much more popular competitor.”

SG: “I am fast and smooth—on paper.”

  • Patrick

I just hope there Is a version without the slide out keyboard for AT&T

Galaxy II is already outdated… Samsung is slow. You have the next iteration of hardware/ android devices coming out in Q4.

    • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

Name one other phone that has better specs out right now.

      • http://www.facebook.com/DIVCorp Corey Fisher

My point is that this phone has been available everywhere else since April. By the time we can buy these handsets here in the U.S., they will have the Galaxy III in a production run in Korea. Specs don’t matter, the phone won’t be released until late September at the earliest. By then, iPhone 5, Windows Mango, the next version of Android and the new Motorola handsets will be releasing with 1.5ghz dual core chips that will smoke this, not to mention QHD and higher rez screens.

  • Max

nevermind this awesome phone where’s the new pink BB Pearl???

  • Frank

Very poor timing of Samsung. They needed to release the S2 in the US this summer.

Everyone has been holding off on their upgrade for the new Iphone 5. And of the S2 were available much sooner than the Iphone 5, it would be a viable option.

But by August 29th, Apple will have sent out invites for their “special announcement sometime first week of September ” everyone would than know Iphone 55 announcement is eminent once Apple announces September conference date.

Only Samsung Galaxy S II is actually Samsung Galaxy S II.

These epics, stratos, etc. are NOT SGS II.
SGS II has Exynos, not Tegra 2. It has Samoled+, not SLCD.
Samsung and the carriers are trying to convince you, that you will buy  SGS II, but it is not true. You’ll buy a good phone, but not the best.

    • Anonymous

Looking at the specs and hardware, I’d say these phones are newer and better than the SGS2. Especially the Verizon version.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anyung-Park/100001062676956 Anyung Park

wait, the the SGSII in the United states are different from the other countries.. So, better.. right?

  • Steve Lee

This can be a Epik fail for Samsung wth GS2 if this is about GS2 launch in US. The rumer (cough cough) says that Iphone 5 will be release on Sep as well and I dont think GS2 wants to go face to face with Iphone5. I know there are many Android fans out there but still US market wise Iphone will kill GS2.Samsung should have release GS2 early Aug so that they have sometime to sell them…. sad sad sad…Samsung GS2 is great but this is US where Apple still dominates….No matter how good your cards are… you gotta play smart to win

    • Hello

      This doesn’t make any sense

  • Up2Bcrazy

Stratosphere is NOT the SG2. And word I’ve gotten is the SG2 is not coming to VZW soon or anytime for that matter. However that said from my lead there is a much better device in the works for VZW that will put the SG2 to shame anyways and supposedly the one in the works should release with ICS even.

    YAWN!!!!! NEXT!!

Whoopee. An August 29th event and probably an October availability? Too late Sammy. The hype is gone. This phone has been out for months worldwide and now your sorry ass finally hits US shores, MAYBE? You’re planning on going head to head with a very probable iPhone 5 launch ? Are you effin nuts? THIS EVENT SHOULD HAVE OCCURRED JULY 29th AND THIS DEVICE SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE HANDS OF MILLIONS OF US CONSUMERS BY NOW!! Because of your poor timing I’m waiting to see what both Apple and Google have to offer. At one time I was drooling for the GS II, now, I’m not so sure.

    • Rome

So, I agree with you sir.  The GS 2 from Verizon was on my to do list all summer and now I could really care less since we will be getting the scraps of what the world already has.  Shoot they already have the white Samsung GS 2 out…….thats a slap in the face.

  • Steel

Well, they’d better have them ready to ship w/ an iPhone 5 announcement likely the following week.  If Apple releases that thing across all carriers, it will be quite a dust-up.  I’m an Android fan, but I’m slowly becoming disenchanted.  Maybe the new cell radio in the iPhone 5 will actually make it viable as a phone.

Please join Motorola on august 30th when they announce a major patent lawsuit vs Samsung. Samsung will be dead in two years  true story™©®

    • Joe112

If there dead in two years then who is Apple going get to make their LCD displays.? Hahaha. True story.

      • Anonymous

LG, chimei innolux  true story™®©

      • Joe112

Hahaha.. Lg.? Then why Apple drop them and went back to Samsung.? True Story.

      • Anonymous

Wow. Ur dum. You really think they “dropped” them. The % of displays from each company may have changed a bit but LG was not dropped. Lol. Anyways. Good try at trolling. true story™®®

      • Joe112

@ Scoat Hahaha.. Yeah you can believe that if you want.

      • Anonymous

Seriously? Hahaha. Last quarter LG made 4.25 million displays for apple. Samsung made 4 million chimei innolux made just over a million. Now the light bleed was from the LG displays. If u really are stupid enuff to think that ALL the 4.25 million displays from LG were defective and apple is not just scaling back LG’s quota AND if u think Samsung could in a quarter ramp up production 100-200 percent to cover the 4-8 million displays that LG is going to make for apple then you sir are a fucken moron or a below average troll. Either way ur not worth any more of my time.  true story™©®

Scroaty-ca-ca is a jackass but I think you are quite uninformed. What he said is true. LG was not dropped by apple. Please if you are going to be a fandroid speak with the facts. Otherwise just shut the fuck up. We don’t need more stupid assholes making us look dumber than we already are. Thanks. Have a good day.

    Really? People care about this?

    • Anonymous

I am pretty excited about this. The SGS2 will most likely be my next phone.

I didn’t realize that it is considered shocking that people care about new technology on a tech blog. In case you have forgotten, the Europe model of the Samsung Galaxy S2 got great reviews. It isn’t like this is a small release.

Apple holds the patent on announcing an announcement.

    Prepared to be litigated, Samsung.

  • Anonymous

I came across the GS2 while traveling in Asia a few weeks ago.  I read the specs and saw that it was unlocked *and* had AT&T 3G+ frequencies.  I was hooked and bought it. If any of you are smartphone hunting and get a similar opportunity, I highly recommend you get it.  My biggest concern was the GPS issues that plagued the GS1.  Glad to say, Samsung seems to have fixed it and it works very well indeed.

  • Eludium Q36

I’ve been patiently waiting for the fantastic Galaxy S II all this time but I’m concerned about this late August announcement, meaning the long wait had better be because they’ll be available at that time, otherwise I cannot wait until late-Sept/Oct for it. So, as lustworthy as it is, if it’s not available to purchase that same week then I’ll snag an almost-just-as-awesome Moto Photon instead (since I’m Sprint Prem-Gold).

This isn’t really for us. It’s for all the people that don’t know anything about the Nexus Prime or the Vigor or what’s coming next. I still want it, but it’s definitely coming too late. This whole thing is kind of a let down for us in the states.

  • http://pau.lc Paul Chambers

Hey, does anyone know if the this version of the SGSII will have NFC? Or will have to wait for the “SGSII Plus” I’ve heard about?
