Millennial: Android tops mobile OS usage for 7th straight month, iPhone still top device

mobile

Millennial issued its June Mobile Mix report Friday morning, and it paints a picture that is very similar to May. Android was once again the most popular smartphone operating system in the month of June as it ticked up one percentage point to receive 54% of all impressions served by the Millennial Media network. iOS lost a point to fall to 26% while RIM shed two points to fall to 15%. Symbian and Windows Phone each gained a point to account for 3% and 2% of the impressions served, respectively. Of note, however, Windows Phone usage was up 31% quarter-over-quarter and BlackBerry OS usage was up 29% over the same period. Apple’s iPhone was still the top device Millennial saw in June with a 16.19% share, nearly triple the BlackBerry Curve, which was the second most popular device at 5.57%. The Motorola DROID filled the No. 3 spot with 2.95%, and the Samsung Nexus S and current-model BlackBerry Bold rounded out the top-5 with 2.71% and 1.99%, respectively. Apple was also the top vendor in June, as its devices accounted for 30.76% of Millennial impressions. Samsung was the No. 2 OEM with 14.94% and RIM held the No. 3 spot with 11.76%. Additional charts outlining more key data from Millennial’s Mobile Mix report follow below.

These reports bug me in they class the iphone in all its versions as one phone then pick each model of other manufacturers as separate phones, iphone would still be top but would at least give idea of which phone.

I’d be interested where Curve comes in relationship to the 4 iphones.

This is what I’ve been saying all along.  If one of my phone requirements is 32 GB of memory, then any iPhone model with 16GB is out of the question…no 3GS.  Just as there are a number of Android phones out of the question.  But if I buy a 32 GB iPhone, it counts just the same.  If I buy a Thunderbolt, it doesn’t count the same.

It’s hard to imagine why pretty much every analyst misses this glaring point.

Because said ANALysts are paid by Apple (and, so are “some” tech’ news blogs).

      @3c1fa674573b6a82b272a139fa86d727:disqus , agreed!
Oh, and LOVE BGR throwing in the ….”iPhone still top device”

Whatever, truth is, choice wins!  Always does!  If someone other than CrApple made a phone that would run iOS, then people would buy it as well.

People need to stop giving credit to CrApple for their pigeon holed mentality, while at the same time bashing Android (and WM7 for that matter) for running on a number of devices!  That doesn’t make Android less successful, and iOS more successful (ummm, 54% to 26%.  I would say the numbers speak a totally different story than the CrApple faithful keep trying to tell)!!

Look at the numbers….WITHOUT the RDF, and rose colored glasses!

Apple as a manufacturer of iOS devices = 30.76%
Other manufacturers of Android devices = 45.57% (with a small margin of error possible due to the fact that some of these manufacturers also make phones for WM7, etc.)

Oh, and add injury to insult…Apple LOST a point, and Android WM7 AND SYMBIAN gained!  Ouch! Loosing Impression points to a feature phone OS….that’s gotta hurt!

      • Anonymous

Actually, iOS to Android is 49% to 41%.

      • Anonymous

It’s so funny you write all that up when you can simply scroll down to the “by OS” graph where Apple still dominates.

Guess that number of devices thing isn’t as important as you think.

      • Guest

When you use ad hominem to attack….using CrApple as an insult shows you as a very biased party…makes your points lose potency

    • Anonymous

Because a two year old phone is lumped in with a one year old phone? If Android can’t compete with the 3GS (i.e. it really makes up such a large number of the stay listed), that’s not Apple’s fault.

    • Randalgraves7

I absolutely agree with you.  As I was reading this that is the first thing that stood out to me.  Every other manufacturer’s devices are separated by model but Apple’s devices are clumped together my make.  Seems a bit skewed if you ask me.  There are five different models between the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4 alone.  And if you didn’t want to break it down into the actual models you could at least break it down into base models, such as how many 3GS and 4 series.  I don’t believe a true analyst would be happy with pooling all the apple products into the same group unless they were being bias.  Just a though.

zach, you’ve obviously spent a lot of time around S.J.’s penis….how do you respond?

    • Anonymous

I agree with you JEHOVAH WITNESS! I believe reporters or writers should make stuff up if the resulting stories don’t agree with the rabid fans like you or I. A report like this, which does say android is number 1, should have the iPhone greyed out and not discussed at all in the story. Otherwise it’s obvious the writer is sucking on someone.

      • Anonymous

The problema here is, and I too agree with the Celestial Testifier, the writer can’t possibly be sucking someone, cough-cough Steve Jobz [shut-up, did I say that¡¿], because Scroatypooo-poo is stuck there. Therefore, no one else is given a sucking chance, including Zachawhoot.

    1. You think they could at least say “in the US”
    2. Wifi?  Does that mean they are calling any mobile device that connects to the internet a smart phone?  I guess that is just a way to include the ipad and ipod touch to the numbers

What do you mean? It lists the iPhone separately for some sets of data, and then specifically lists the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch together when comparing iOS vs Android.

apple owned again, and again, and again…

    • Zac Caslin

You might want to look at the chart again.

      • Anonymous

Imma looking and I’m seeing Android up 1% and Apple down 1% in market share.  Single devices sales mean nothing.

      • Michael Scrip

Actually… single device sales mean a lot to companies who SELL PRODUCTS… which is every company on that list.

And Apple sells a lot of phones.  Even though they only have a handful of phones… Apple outsells companies who sell dozens of phones.

Earlier you said Apple was owned.  Like… are they filing for bankruptcy soon?  Are they in that much trouble?

You’re gonna be surprised next week during Apple’s earnings call.  Once again the iPhone will bring Apple about $10 billion in revenue.

        That doesn’t sound like ownage….

In fact… any of those other companies would KILL to sell as many phones as Apple does.

      • Zac Caslin

Did you miss the all connected devices. Look at that again.

wasn’t there another statistic out that said that 34% of iphone users actually believe that they have a 4G device? LOL.. that was just epic!!

    • Anonymous

Ya same statistic said that 28% of android owners and 21% of BB owners thought they had a 4g phone. What’s your point? If tour going to bring up a point bring it in full.

      • Anonymous

What a moron do YOU have to be to have not read it in the first place..AND to NOt understand that 4G is pretty much available only to Android at the moment. So DUH!!.. if 29% of Android owners think they have 4G.. it is because.. er… they HAVE 4G!..
But if 34% of iphone users think they have 4G.. it only means they are moronic sheeple like you.

      • Zac Caslin

And those android users are supposed to be tech savvy. Lol

      • http://twitter.com/cdoruff Collin Doruff

The 29% of android users may in fact be using a 4G phone.

  • Anonymous

so when it comes to phones..  android is selling far FAR more than ios??? gee.. someone in BGR is gonna be fired!!

    • Zac Caslin

I wonder how. They have 300 different phones and 290 of them are free. You do the math. Apple only sells phones in the high end market.

      • Remington Jackson

Thats a good point if you only look at the US. since they have a nice amount of European carriers that sell iphones for free on contract. I would hardly say apply only sales high end since really the 3GS is not a high end product based on what is around now. Its mid range at best. Also a lot of android phones you can get for free even ones that are high end like the Droid Incredible 2, but that’s only true if you go through third parties; newegg, compusa/tigerdirect, walmart, etc. Otherwise you might end up paying over 200 for a subsidized android phone. Really are you a person that does that, most post people I talk to or even when I read comments complain how high end android phones can get more expensive than a 32 gig iPhone 4. I wouldnt talk too much about price even though it is cheaper on average in favor of android, but not nearly as bad as what you are saying,

    • http://twitter.com/cdoruff Collin Doruff

And iBGR just lost some money and its dinner date with Jobs was cancelled.

Which iphone is it? The ones with the little or big gbs?

    • http://twitter.com/cdoruff Collin Doruff

Hello. I would like an iPhone please. The one with the big gee-bees.

    • Remington Jackson

Good question. Probably all of them.

  • Remington Jackson

You know I always wonder this when ever I see someone saying that the iphone is the top device. What does it really mean? Seeing how there are 2 versions still being sold on a global scale; 3GS and iPhone 4. I would wonder is there a big difference if you break it down like that, what do you think?

  • Remington Jackson

Oh and the all devices one gets me thinking they count mobile tablets, this is really something especially since some companies dont make them yet. Also some companies make them, but they arent sold in the US. Statistics that show a lot of charts are nice, but really if notice what they include and dont include then really they do not mean much.

  • Hemant Agrawal

iOS may be leading…..but android is sure to catch up in the near future….

I read this, and thought that I would share this with you:

It’s easy to see why RIM will be the dominant Smartphone
    player in the east.

Apple is an American company; Apple pays taxes to the American
government. The government uses that money to purchase weapons and missiles, to
use against the people of the east.

Android is software made by Google. Google is an American
company; Google pays taxes to the American government. The government uses that
money to purchase weapons and missiles, to use against the people of the east.

Nokia and Microsoft together. Microsoft is an American
company; Microsoft pays taxes to the American government. The government uses
that money to purchase weapons and missiles, to use against the people of the
    east.

RIM is a Canadian company. Canadians love everyone.

Nokia use to do very well out east. But now that they have
joined an American company, it’s an entire new ball game.

  • http://prowest.ws PROWEST

I suppose the reason is that they (Motorola, Samsung, etc.) actually edit the OS and release their tweaked version “fracturing” the Android experience where as it is hardly noticeable in Apple devices that each model is slightly different. You bring up good points.

  • Justjc51

I wonder how much of the Connected devices space WebOS have, after all HP says their tablet and phones are Connected devices and not just tablets and smartphones ;-P

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, RawCent.çom

Wow, that is real domination by Android.

  • http://let5ch.tumblr.com/ Tim Letscher

It’s easy to misinterpret these stats to mean that Android devices dominate. This report is about media impressions – paid ads. One could also draw a conclusion that Android apps serve up a disproportionate number of ads thereby claiming a bigger piece of pie. Most of the apps I use on my iPhone don’t contain ads.
