Galaxy S II becomes Samsung’s fastest-selling smartphone, tops 3 million units in 55 days

Samsung on Sunday announced that its Galaxy S II smartphone has quickly become the fastest-selling smartphone in the South Korean technology giant’s history. Shipments of the company’s new superphone have topped 3 million units in just 55 days, meaning Samsung has shipped an average of more than 54,545 Galaxy S II smartphones each day since its release. Impressively, Samsung achieved the feat before the device even launched in the U.S., one of the company’s top markets for its original Galaxy S smartphone — which took 85 days to reach the same 3 million-device milestone. “Announced at Mobile World Congress 2011, the GALAXY S II represents our most advanced smartphone to date and demonstrates Samsung’s commitment to deliver premium, market-defining devices,” said Samsung’s mobile boss, J. K. Shin, in a statement. “This milestone reflects the continued strong support from our carrier partners around the world who have chosen the GALAXY S II as their flagship Android device.” Samsung’s full note to the press follows below.

3 million in 55 days is about 54,000 a day.

Last quarter the iPhone was selling over 200,000 a day… and that’s with the iPhone 4 being 6-8 months old at the time, and the 3GS being even older.

    • Coffeecharity

Apart from the point that it hasn’t yet been released world wide….. you fxxking idiot ;)

      • MattInPDX

But that’s what being an Apple fanboy is all about. They read only part of what the article says and make apples to oranges comparison, no pun intended.

      • Michael Scrip

Oh come on… it was just an observation. Don’t Android fans say the same thing whenever Apple makes an announcement like this?

How many articles have been written that said “insert phone outsells the iPhone in insert country“

There were tons of articles last year when the original Galaxy S “outsold” the iPhone in Japan, Korea, etc.

The problem is… that was for one week.  It’s a great headline… and it really excites the Android fans.

But… while the original Galaxy S outsold the iPhone in certain markets during a certain time…  Samsung only sold about 10 million Android phones last quarter… to Apple’s 18 million iPhones.

Will the Galaxy S II finally outsell the iPhone for real?

      • Anonymous

@michaelscrip:disqus the article makes no mention of Apple or the iphone. You brought it up, in a misguided manner.

To make it worse you now continue with the flamebait by saying “Don’t Android fans do this dishonest thing that I did” and then go on to blame the article for not stating everything in the headline so that fanboys like you wouldn’t get duped. Please.

      • Michael Scrip

        @kspace:disqus

Rest assured… in the next iPhone article on BGR (you know there will be one) a bunch of Android fans will bring up the latest and greatest Android phone.

        Turnabout is fair play

      • Zac Caslin

The iPhone was only in a handful of countries when it launched.

    • SG2

The iPhone is out to all markets, this phone hasn’t even reached North America yet and it sold that many. Wait until it released on a global market.

      • Michael Scrip

How big is the North American market compared to the rest of the world?

      • James

North American market is the one that gives Iphone the sale of 1 million/week you sh*t head

      Get back to worship …

    • Rick

Also, Apple considers iPod Touch as a iPhone and counts them as such.

      • Michael Scrip

        Wrong…

Apple includes the iPod Touch into the iOS device numbers.

But Apple is very clear to say specifically “18.65 million iPhones in Q2 2011″

Than figure does NOT include iPods…

      • Rick

Interesting, since the WWDC 2011, they said this:
“WWDC 2011 included lots of numbers, including those for Macs with OS X and for iOS devices. Apple is claiming to have 44% of all mobile devices. This includes iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads.”

I know Google said that they do not include android tablets in the android phone activation. Microsoft get their numbers from how many Win7 OS they sell to retailers, not really how many Win7 OS customers actually purchased.

      • Michael Scrip

        @cad748b101659899fee18228d8cb5d85:disqus

Apple claiming to have 44% of all mobile devices is different than what I’m talking about.

If you read Apple’s quarterly reports… they say things like:

        - Apple sold 3.76 million Macs during the quarter…
        - Apple sold 9.02 million iPods during the quarter…
        - The Company sold 18.65 million iPhones in the quarter…
        - The Company also sold 4.69 million iPads during the quarter…

Those are solid numbers…. not a percentage of an unknown quantity in a market…

Michael Scrip   What point are you trying to make?  Grow up boy

      • Michael Scrip

        @Mr_Vault:disqus

I don’t think you put me in my place at all.

There are 50+ Android phones from many manufacturers… it’s a completely different method than what Apple does.

So are you bragging that a multi-manufacturer platform like Android can outsell a single manufacturer like Apple?

And what does it mean?  Android is currently #1… no argument there.  Does that mean Android is better than iOS?  Or does it just sell more?

Take the iPod.  It was the #1 selling MP3 player.  But… some people say iPods were terrible… because they had horrible sound quality and you were shackled to iTunes. Sales numbers didn’t have anything to do with the quality of the product.

So… it’s possible to sell the most things (Android)… but not actually be the best.

    • Observer

I have figured out what is wrong with all those Apple fans.  They all bought an overpriced device, now they find out, other people can buy a superior product for much less money.
Crawl back under your rock Michael Scrip, dont forget to charge your Iphone

So I guess you will never buy any not-for-free apps from the Appstore? If you want to resale everything, then buy a Ferrari, a Penthouse, a Vertu and shut up!

  • http://twitter.com/jimmiekain Jimmie

Dude whats the deal? Is this thing coming to sprint or not?

    • Rick

Yes, and it is called Samsung Within and should launch mid July or early August.

      • serpentor

hmmm, we’re in day 4 of july already and no mention of a launch. Looks like they copied how to be tight lipped from Apple too.

      • http://twitter.com/jimmiekain Jimmie

Do they plan on announcing it on release date? Or will they have the decentcy to give us a few days notice? Its the 4th already for goodness sake. My guess is that it will come out at the end of the 3rd quarter… Around September but I hope sooner! I returned my evo3d to get this bad boy!

    • No

      What about Verizon?

      • Rick

That is a very good question.
AT&T SGS2 is supposed to be released soon as well. TMO maybe getting the Hercules version, and Verizon maybe delaying theirs because of the Droid Bionic (8/4 release) either before or after the iPhone 5.

Its human nature to read thoroughly only the parts that reinforces their biased viewpoints and completely disregard those points that counter their views.

This is why arguments between “fanboys” will never resolve.

  • Anonymous

This is why Apple needs to crush Samsung and ban their Android devices from US soil.

3 million devices sold in 55 days.. BEFORE reach the US market.

As the iFanboys say: It’s not about being the first, but being the best.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, but Samsung has a history of reporting shipments to channels as “sales” as they don’t sell directly to consumers.

      • http://twitter.com/trick202 Rich Fletcher

Does this take into consideration the amount returned?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=63900900 Sean Eppel

“This milestone reflects the continued strong support from our carrier
partners around the world who have chosen the GALAXY S II as their
flagship Android device.”  How can he say around the world when I don’t think it’s launched in North of South America yet.  JK Shin should take a look at a map if he wants those sales numbers to keep growing.

    • http://twitter.com/trick202 Rich Fletcher

      North America isn’t the be-all and end-all.

Nokia was dominant for many, many years without the need for the Yanks.

It certainly helped Android numbers swell on the release of the fist Droid – but I’m not sure it’ll swell like that again.

I don’t care who sold what, in how many amounts:  I WANT THIS PHONE.

  • Steve Lee

I think Iphone will sell more through out the year for sure. I have customer buying 2~3 even 4 iphones because either their screen cracked, stolen, left them in the bar etc. Its really wierd at least at this location.. the percentage of Iphone replacement is extremely high compare to other smartphone.(lost,stolen,damage).
I guess that all gets to added to Iphone sales number.
Return rate on the Iphone ? Not too high anymore it was really bad until Iphone 3gs came out but now maybe 1 out of every 20 sold. Anyway so my point is that Iphone will problemly sell more than thoughout the year not talking about the day of launch.
And people please stop comparing Iphone 4 and GS2. Its clear that GS2 is a winner. Its not a fare because to Iphone because its been out longer than GS2. Lets start compare them after Iphone5 gets release. Since it will be new-er device than GS2 and lets see how better is the New Iphone5 is to the Old GS2 ?

    • Steve Lee

Oh I forgot one thing. Since at&t will offer insurance to Iphone( Finally !) that may drop the rate of Iphone sales number but again would you want to pay $12 a month for your Iphone to be insured?

  • Cer

Not surprising. How else are you going to get Gingerbread on a Samsung device? :)
