New evidence of Android apps running on BlackBerry phones emerges

Software

Mobile app developer ShopSavvy reports that its Android application has recently been tested on multiple BlackBerry devices. BGR exclusively reported last month that RIM may be working on a solution that would allow Android apps to run on its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Now, it appears as though RIM may be doing more extensive testing with Android apps that may move beyond the PlayBook tablet or even the QNX platform. According to ShapSavvy’s analytics data, as tracked by Flurry, the following devices accessed its servers while running the ShopSavvy app for Android:

  • BlackBerry 8300 ran ShopSavvy on January 31, 2011
  • BlackBerry 8600 ran ShopSavvy on January 17 and 24, 2011
  • BlackBerry 8520 ran ShopSavvy on February 7, 2011

We’re not sure why these old devices would be used for testing, but we have a feeling this picture will get a bit clearer in the coming weeks and months. Also of note: according to geographic data contained within the logs, ShopSavvy says these hits came from Waterloo, Ontario in Canada — where RIM is headquartered.

Thanks, Luke

    That should be illegal!!!

Let them get their own apps’!

    • Brian

It’s just the developing platform that android uses for applications. No law breaking here. It’s ultimately up to the developer If they want their application on blackberry.

      • http://ebpp.com ebpp

yeah and since the difference in code is very slight, it’s stupid not to release the app on all possible markets

    • http://twitter.com/ChazClout ChazClout

That really goes against the “open” mantra. I welcome this personally.

      • http://seoagencies.com seo agencies

yeah, the more apps the better for everyone

    • Lewis Kezagger

Huh???? The only “group” that should be ticked about this is other hardware manufacturers. Google still get’s their piece of the pie and the developers of the apps have an even greater exposure increasing the amount of potential sales. There is no way HTC/Samsung/LG can come back against RIM on this unless Google was silly enough to sign some sort of exclusivity agreement stating “android apps must be run on an android OS phone”. I doubt they would have. Hoping this is incorporated into BB Balance

      • http://twitter.com/DavisDarvish Davis Darvish

google cant make any exclusivity agreement like that. android is open and thus RIM can use parts of in their phones as long as they release the source code once they put it on their phones. the beauty of being open… i for one welcome this and if RIM starts using android all out on their phones even better. then there is a possibility i might go back to BB one day

      • Scorp

Yeah all the manufacturers should be pissed because Google is making their competition better.

    • Magesh911

      what illegal!!!
android from a opensource platform, so NOo. not illegal…….

    • Anonymous

      Don’t be silly.

Android runs a Unix/Linux derivative and the new BlackBerry OS is QNX (Posix) so it’s not surprising that BlackBerrys can run Android apps.

      Go RIM!

    • http://twitter.com/derrickisonline Derrick -Lex-

I think that’s a great idea. Smart move on RIM’s part. PAPINYC, that’s not the best way to look at it. Think open. Think more options. Maybe you love Blackberry (which I don’t) but you want all the apps from Android. Now you can choose and Android phone or a Blackberry. It’s a win win for everyone, especially Google and the developers who have a wider audience meaning more monetizing opportunities. If Microsoft did the same with Windows 7 phones, they probably could sell a ton more phones.

    World domination… That is all…

  • http://twitter.com/ChazClout ChazClout

    Write once, run anywhere…..
This could be good for Android Developers.

  • http://www.pixelsystems.net pr0cs

Seems like a great idea, especially if you’re alreadying developing Android apps, but I’m terrified to think how sluggish most of the apps would run.

    • Lewis Kezagger

I’m thinking the new devices being launch with 1Ghz+ processors will accomodate this.

  • BerryKing

For all of you fagdroids suckers, it seems like RIM just insert their cock in ur girlfriends vagina by running your apps! Lolllllll
And all of you were saying that BB were too crappy to even be in Androids way! I guess it aint crappy enough for your girlfriends (Android apps) punany!
You see, Android apps is the punany which is the sweet part! You can keep the rest! Lollll

    • Geust

you sound like iOS user, no need for that sort of language :)

    • http://twitter.com/ChazClout ChazClout

      Well done! Lolllllll
I think ending every sentance with an exclamation mark makes it even more lolleriffic and finishing every other one with “Lolllllll”… Pure golden comedy!
Man you showed those fagdroids! TrolLolllllll

Beautiful analogy cloaked with a tenuous grasp of the English language, I really like your style.

Hey, you shouldn’t talk about your mother that way; she does give a good RIM’, though!!

      • BerryKing

I was actually talking about your girlfriends pussy! and my mom is really old and if shes your girlfriend, well i love her but it is sad to say that you are a sick man! You probably need more than a fagdroid phone or app to help you! Lol! Dum fagdroid Trol! Lol

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

I just creampied your mom. Say hello to your little brother for me in 9 months!

      • Gary Poppins

Okay man, come on. Conduct your self responsibly. Stoked on your zeal for Rim and BB, Im a user myself. But come on, we all come here to discuss up and coming phones in a “care free” and “safe” environment. No need for those kind of comments here.

In reply to BB running droid apps… Great! That will hopefully regain a huge market that is turned off by its lack of quality apps. Only way I could see this being bad is if RIM gave up its exclusiveness to BBM and made it open for android devices. Great in a sense because they’d have tons more users, bad in a sense that those users wouldnt be using blackberry devices lol.

    • http://twitter.com/DaniyalK Daniyal Khatri

This just makes #android better platform for developers. Most Blackberry users are people with more disposable income.

    • http://twitter.com/derrickisonline Derrick -Lex-

Shouldn’t you be at school or something kid?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

You sound like you’re 14 years old. Go away kid.

      • BerryKing

And you sound like you have absolutely nothing to do seeing you lurking around the site! if im a kid, fine but your even worse since your an adult and your wasting your time not only surfing this site but answering me as well! Dumb fag!

By the way I hope you know about menopause so even if you would do my mom, no little brother would come out! Plus your as sick as the other guy since my mom is very old! You guys have big time psychological problems and its nothing a fagdroid phone will solve! Lol

Oh and by the way, the girl in your picture is the one that RIM rammed with their dicks! and i put dicks with an “s” cause your girl got rammed by more than one RIM dick at the same time and more than once! LOL freaking fagdroid bitch! Get a life!

        Almost forgot:
Hail to Blackberry and Playbook is the shit!!!

  • Geust

RIM always thinks about it’s corporate customers.. and since there are a lot of older devices out there, they try to offer same services as newer devices (where possible) so it makes sense for them to test such service, no need to get excited though.. it just might be offered to corporate only devices.. such as dell who has a mixture of Android/BlackBerry to menage..

Also if you remember RIM said to be developing BES to support non-Rim devices…

RIM keeps fighting for domination… you must admit, they are good at it.

  • sirpaul

Wow, this could be very awesome! BB doesn’t have anywhere near as much app choice as iPhone or Android OS devices have.

  • Anonymous

Those Device ID’s are most likely decoys. RIM is very aware that Devs can track Device IDs in their apps.

    • Jack

Decoy’s indeed. Suprised the writer didn’t cartch that.

  • Penguin3107

There’s no such thing as a BlackBerry 8600.

    • http://twitter.com/ChazClout ChazClout

      Yet…..

    • Tony

8600 was the working number for the current 9300 during its development. Basically the numbers above represent all the Curve models (excluding the 8900)

  • Neoprimal

OK RIM….now open up BBM to Android.

    • Anonymous

Okay idea but BBM in encrypted, so Andriod would have to step up security first. But lets wait and see where all these rumors go.

    • lulu

      hahahaha

    • Garret Wilkinson

If that happened, Id never buy a Blackberry Device again. I’d score an Atrix 4G or galaxy 2 and never look back.

  • Anonymous

50/50 is how I feel about this possibility from the start of this rumor. On one hand getting access to a lot of Apps sounds cool for the large amount of Apps fans. On the other side, RIM’s BB apps and app store may fad away. I can hear the Android and Apple fan boys now, RIM would fail if it don’t get android apps on board. But, at the end it’s about companies making money and consumers coming back.

    • Tony

I doubt they would end up cutting a deal to access the Android Market. if anything all this would mean for Android developers is that it would be as easy as just submitting your Android App to the BB App World rather than actually using an Android Marketplace.

      • Anonymous

Sounds like a great idea to me.

This just means RIM can’t stand on it’s too feet. Hopefully they realize how irrelevant they have become in the consumer market. Desperate move.

    • lulu

lol too feet … looks like you can’t stand on your two feet.

  • max

But but but but but but but but but but but but but but but but but I thought blackberry morons said they don’t need apps?? These same morons said they were all fart machines? They were happy with their $49.95 mapquest apps. Ah so secretly, you MORONS wanted cool phones cool apps but being tech mental midgets you felt stuck, didn’t you, morons?

    • Todd

C’mon max, let us know…. Are you 12, or 13 years old?

  • Anonymous

Pretty sad the only way BB can stop the flood of people leaving their outdated platform is to emulate/steal from others. They haven’t had an original idea in 3 years.. they haven’t had an OS that actually had ANY wow factor during the same time.. but they sure know how to pump out consistent mediocrity. Only a Lemming would still be using BB (or are forced by company).

  • Anonymous

That actualyl looks like it might work OK, good deal dude.

    http://www.web-anonymity.it.tc

  • Max

Smart move. They better do something before they become the Commodore 64 of the phone business.

  • Booboolala2000

If this happens legitimately, it will be huge for the Android Market. Then only a matter of time before BB skins Android and world domination is complete. Lol

    • Tabasco1tx

I bet eventually even Nokia will jump ship and head to Android. Which means Microsoft will be left in the cold. And with Google developing a PC/laptop OS,Microsoft’s lead in computers will eventually come to an end…But..The question is this, with all the privacy concerns with Google,is it better to trust the devil we know versus the devil we don’t????

  • http://bit.ly/samirsshah समीर शाह

Go with it, RIM. (Assuming lawyers say that everything is clear, GPL?)
