Google announces more Google TV partners, NBC, HBO, Turner

Entertainment

Earlier today, Google posted a quick update on the status of their soon-to-be-released Google TV home entertainment product. The company noted “overwhelming” interest by content providers while announcing several of the viewing modules that will be available when Google TV launches. Google announced that Turner Broadcasting, NBC Universal, HBO, the NBA, Amazon, Pandora, Napster, Netflix, The New York Times, and USA Today will all have content that is optimized for viewing via Google’s internet connected set-top box. Like all streaming services currently offered, providers will not make all of their programming available via Google TV… but it is a start. Hit the jump to check out a quick video of just what Google TV will look like.

    • Jarrett

      never again. lama…..what r u like 13.

  • Beall

Can I get a release date?

    • Jarrett

      no.

    • Jack

Logitech is announcing wednesday…. Sony on the 12th… very soon my friend.

  • Obj_me

Looks pretty interesting…be cool if they open sourced it and made it available for x86 based hardware. That way people could utilize what they already have or could build there own set top box. Overall looks like a great start though!

    • Jarrett

No its a bad start. now google is gonna collect info on what you watch, and might even capture your every move.

      • duh

You think Apple isn’t doing the same?

      • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

Not really. But do we care??? You know we don’t care if Google has ALL our information. I don’t care, and most of us Goofans (aka Apple Haters) don’t care either. We know that Google is SKYNET and we embrace it! We LOVE IT.

Jarrett, you seem to forget that Google is NOT EVIL! They are a good corporation that gives away all its products for the good of humanity and doesn’t care at all about profits.

You Apple fanboys would never be able to understand that. Call all you guys care about are profits. NOT GOOGLE. Google is about doing GOOD and that’s why we are safe letting them have ALL OUR PERSONAL information. I sent Eric Schmidt my social security number, my DOB, my entire credit history and told him to keep it safe cause I trust him and his entire company!

      • Ernie

You have to admit that Google TV looks really fucking good. It does concern me that Google does all this for NO COST to the consumer. I know us Google Fanboys believe 100% that Google doesn’t really get all our info, but it makes you wonder. Makes you wonder about Skynet. It’s scary, but damn it looks GREAT! It’s like I am being sucked in and I don’t care.

I know my fellow Google fanboys will come to Google’s defense that Google doesn’t do evil, but nevertheless, you MUST WONDER!

      • MicroNix

@Goofan, your useless cynical posts are no longer amusing. You must really be one hell of an Apple fan (maybe even Stevie himself?!??) Do yourself a favor and open up your iTunes. Now watch as all your musical interests are sent to Apple (no really, they don’t use your information whatsoever). Feel safe that Apple isn’t using your library to target other artists to you (much like Google does for advertising). Feel even safer as genius delights the Apple servers with your entire collection. Now disconnect your iPhone from iTunes and watch iAds magically target ads to you without collecting an ounce of data. Now comes the important part…get an iLife!

      • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

        @MiniNix (aka MicroNix)

I agree with you wholeheartedly! I’d rather give google ALL my information, cause they are NOT like Apple. They only use our information for good and NOT for evil. Why are you giving me a hard time when I am like you. I believe in Eric and Google. I believe they SHOULD have 100% of our information. We need Skynet, we WANT Skynet!!!! And I, like you, want to make sure Google, not Apple, has all my info. Keep it coming baby. Let’s hate on Apple together because they are evil and Google is part of the Lord’s army!

      • ?

you sound like a brain washed drone.. all companies are the same…apple…google…microsoft…sony…i can go on and on… too believe one is less evil than the other is asinine

      • http://www.stayneardisney.co.uk Wheatley

Well at least Google collects information and you know it. The Gov are collecting all your info and you have no idea how much!

    • Rob Raines

Sony, Logitech and Intel get 1 year exclusivity before Google opens up the code.

Hoping apps won’t be locked to a a certain CPU type. Having Intel compete with ARM would keep costs low, and allow other companies like Nvidia etc to compete.

  • RobGom

    I WANT!

    • Jarrett

bequite robfag. get a windows phone 7 and call it a day

      • RobGom

YO JARRET…..Go shove a windows phone 7 up your ass or better yet, remove whatever other apparatus you have shoved up there already. That includes your head.

      • peoplerstupid

@RobGom…i think your the one up Jarretts ass…

  • Jarrett

lame i would take apple tv or microsoft msn any day over any goooogle china rip offf.

    • Bert

My question is Why? This has everything Apple TV does – rentals, Netflix, browsing, etc. plus extras like browsing, search, etc. Seems Google is ahead of Apple on this one.

    • superchunk

You’re just mad that Google is going way beyond Apple on this one. This is where AndroidOS begins to far outstrip iOS as it will become the default OS on internet enabled electronics… all with GoogleTV built in as an app.

      • Mgl323

@Bert @superchunk why are you both replying to a troll? Clearly this isn’t the original jarret..

      • Jarrett

Of course this isn’t the original Jarrett… he’s 10 times more gay than this.

Apple owns everyone. I like Apple because they make shiny things. Oh, and because I wear Apple Bottom Jeans.

  • Tdot34

Google to Apple…. “Suck it Jobs”

  • ldudiaz

One quick question, let say i dont have any cable/satellite provier. Can I still connect the logitech add on to my tv? or do I need a cable/satellite box to use google tv?

    • superchunk

Depends on your TV. In the near future, i.e. next big round of TVs, they will start including AndroidOS in the background and internet connectivity. This means Google TV won’t require a separate box and will simply be built into your TV as an application.

So if you’re wanting this feature, maybe wait until 2011 for the next Sony or Samsung LCDs.

      • Ace Of Space

Thats all going to depend on how successful this inital foray into television programming goes.

If it does”t catch on with the buying public, you can throw your predictions out the window.

      • superchunk

It will catch on by default as they all simply add it due to Android being essentially free for the manufacturer.

Any TV needs some sort of OS and if Android is free and nearly universal then why would they choose anything else?

Whether the public connects it to the internet is a different story. But I know that nearly every bluray player out there now has internet features; it has become expected, a feature I wouldn’t use, but its there (just use my PS3 for internet stuff on TV).

      • Dan

I think the TV Manufacturing and delivery of broadcast media is different than phones. Manufacturers like Sony are already bigger players in the media world than Google and are quite capable of delivering content without Google or Android, so I don’t see their rush to depend on Google for their systems as phone manufacturers do.

Samsung on the other hand being a company that seems unwilling or incapable of any actual company innovation in any of the products they make, I can see coming online with it.

I don’t see the biggest media player of them all, Sony doing the same though.

    • jason

HBO and some others require a satellite or cable account to view via google tv.

    • ldudiaz

Thank you all for the responses. I meant to say if i could connect the box itself without the sable subscription

  • nomad

Anything would be better than my crappy scientific atlantic DVR..

  • Jarrett

I’m so gay that I have to defend Apple with every last breathe. Man I suck at life.

    • nomad

      It’s a disease: Brand Myopia

    • Alvaro

Man how old are you 13… grow up !!! it is not funny at just makes you look like an idiot.

  • patrick

So much more than apple tv. Can’t wait to get one. This is googles iphone. Release date would be nice though.
Actually I can see cable companies integrating this into their set top boxes in a couple of years.

  • serpentor

ATV = $100 for 2 networks to rent shows from. LMFAO

    • duh

      lol

  • Harharhar

Google TV also just got Twitter.

    http://www.androidcentral.com/twitter-google-tv-works

    Apple should be taking notes.

    • Bob

      Great! Twittering from your couch.

No wonder America is the world leader in Fat Ass Disease

  • Shammy

I’ll stick to my Direct TV and my 48 inch HDTV for watching tv and my pc for doing pc stuff.

Nothing here to make me want it. Redundant, Redundant, Redundant

This would be a waste of money just like Apple TV.

  • Mgl

Can’t TV just be for watching TV (and console games too)? I mean, if I wanted to check stocks, game scores, play music through the TV, why not just check your smarthphone to see those updates? Why not just plug (or use bluetooth) in your mp3 or smartphone directly into the surround sound system? The only good option that I see is the amazon movie market and netflix.

  • Max

Google gets bigger and bigger. Blackberry comes out with a 1995 7″ ipad clone with wifi only. What a joke and Blackberry morons are even bigger jokes. How do you spell moron? M-O-R-A-N.

  • Stickyicky

The success of GTV all depends on it’s cost. If it’s $200 or more, it will fail. Apple realized this, and that’s why the ATV is $99. The only thing GTV does that ATV doesn’t is searching all of your apps and programming for content, which can currently be done through most people’s content providers….just not as seemless and pretty. ATV will have apps in the near future, so please explain to me the huge difference that makes GTV a homerun over ATV? I don’t want to surf the internet on my 58″ plasma or use it to chat on twitter while my TV show is minimized in a small box. If I wanted to do all of that, I would just use my laptop, smartphone or iPad, and not have to shrink the screen or interupt my HD viewing. Sure the 1080p rental and viewing is cool, but unless you have a super fast connection, you’re still going to get pixelation or imperfect viewing due to compression issues. Until higher speeds are widely available 1080p steaming is irrelevant. I’ll stick with Blu-Ray for 1080p movies and content. All in all, if this sucker is clos to $99, I may give it a try along with my ATV?

    • Whyat

It’s the browser dude. It’s not just for surfing the internet. It’s being able to go to ANY site with video content at YOUR discretion. Any one here ever watch adult content? Now it’s integrated into your TV thanks to the browser on G TV. Not that anyone here ever watches that sort of thing, or that adult content ever dictates success in technology…

  • AndroidFella

So chances are as much as GoogleTV sounds great, it’ll be worthless to anyone living outside of the USA because of licensing issues with the studios, ie Pandora, NBC, Netflix (it’s very limited in Canada).

    Oh well, it sounded great.

    • Luke

yes except for – it will run android, you will probably be able to root it or use a VPN to fake being inside the US.

there will be lots of options coming down the pipe soon enough. This is a big door opener.

  • Ace Of Space

Think I’ll pass, and use the money I’d spend on it to take more trips to Vegas.

    • Luke

logitech box is $300… how are you getting multiple trips to Vegas for $300? Tell us your secret ;)

I for one would consider this $300 well spent. I haven’t found a good enough TV solution yet, some are close but crippled. This one has some potential.

lets see, a high end cable bill is what like $120 / month?
In a few years I will be able to buy packages I want individually (like Hulu pro, HBO, netflix, etc.) all together I’ll come in well under half of the $120 / month and probably have more content. f*&% cable.

This will pay for itself in the long run.

      • Ace Of Space

I would’nt hold my breath about it paying for itself in the long run. This will be a let me stick my hand in your pocket and see how much I can come up with proposition, and everyone involved will have the hand in pocket getting their share.

I pay less than $70 a month for all the programming I could want including HD on Direct TV, as opposed to the $120 you state

As far as Vegas, I’m talking about the subscription price each month and I didn’t say it would pay for the entire trips, but it’ll pay for most of my gas as I’m in SoCal. Or it might pay for some nice dinners or a few extra drinks.

Sorry, just don’t see any value, unless you want to watch on your PC, which I could care less about.

      • AtlHarry

Ok, I see this soo many times and I have to say something now…

*I have nothing against your argument.*

But people, PLEASE stop saying “I COULD care less.” That means you actually care.

The correct phrase is “I couldN’T care less.”

It’s right up there with saying “Nu-Cu-Lar” on my annoying things people say list.

      • Ace Of Space

        Sorry,

If I knew the Grammer Nazis were in the house here on BGR, I would spend two minutes instead of one writing my comments.

  • MadSkillz

    Looks good.

So uh…. Who’s gonna do tech support? cause I see a disaster in the makings if they don’t square that away on DAY ONE.

    • MadSkillz

Also one more thing. NBC jumping in so early might be a bad omen.

Why? Because remember all the bull$#^T NBC put Apple through. For what? To gouge the viewers. I’m betting we may be in for a price increase on content in the near future.

      • Ace Of Space

Everybody involved from Google to NBC to Netflix is not going to get involved unless they can make money off of it one way or another. If they can’t make money on advertising then they will charge for the content by requiring some sort of subscription.

This is a business, not charity for the masses.

  • Joe Silverton

Another cool gadget. I need to stop working so I have some time to enjoy this stuff. However I need to keep working to afford it, so I guess I’m fucked.

  • DJ

hope there is a HTC version….

    • superchunk

GoogleTV will be part of Android’s experience, so yes there is an HTC version. :)

  • peoplerstupid

I c Google is trying to be like Apple once again…

  • Stickyicky

$299 for the Logitech/GoogleTV!?! Ugh, no thanks! I have access to enough video content with my current services! I don’t need to fork out another $300 for this extension of my services.

  • patrick

Pre-Ordered. should be here by the end of October. Sweet!!!
