Leaked: Apple's internal iPhone 4 antenna troubleshooting procedures

Exclusive

iPhone-4-1

The antenna issues plaguing the iPhone 4 have infuriated many iPhone users (and rightfully so), but have you ever wondered how Apple is training its employees to deal with the fiasco? Well thanks to one of our Apple connects, we now know the exact procedures AppleCare reps must follow when dealing with any reception complaints regarding the iPhone 4. Hit the jump to check them out.

1. Keep all of the positioning statements in the BN handy – your tone when delivering this information is important.

a. The iPhone 4′s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. Our testing shows that iPhone 4′s overall antenna performance is better than iPhone 3GS.

b. Gripping almost any mobile phone in certain places will reduce its reception. This is true of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and many other phones we have tested. It is a fact of life in the wireless world.

c. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 3GS, avoid covering the bottom-right side with your hand.

d. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 4, avoid covering the black strip in the lower-left corner of the metal band.

e. The use of a case or Bumper that is made out of rubber or plastic may improve wireless performance by keeping your hand from directly covering these areas.

2. Do not perform warranty service. Use the positioning above for any customer questions or concerns.

3. Don’t forget YOU STILL NEED to probe and troubleshoot. If a customer calls about their reception while the phone is sitting on a table (not being held) it is not the metal band.

4. ONLY escalate if the issue exists when the phone is not held AND you cannot resolve it.

5. We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers – DON’T promise a free bumper to customers.

Clearly Apple is taking the position that nothing is wrong with the antenna, although that’s not surprising since most companies will never willingly admit their flagship product is potentially suffering from an unfixable flaw. But does anyone else find it interesting, if not troubling, that there is no mention of an impending software fix?

Apple cannot afford to send 1 dollar bumpers to appease their VERY loyal fan base? Didn’t Nintendo give out free Wii condoms when people were throwing the controller against walls and TVs? And Microsoft extended XBox 360 warranties for 3 years?

    • A

Yes, but they don’t have a rabid fan base. Apple makes some really good looking products, but their reaction to this ‘non-issue’ really scares me!

      • http://www.thedigitalorchard.ca/ Ted Wood

If you were running Apple, how would you [realistically] handle a situation where you sold nearly 2 million devices in 3 days and then had reports like this? Please do tell.

      • BigRed

Every single person I have ever seen with an iPhone 3Gs has bought their own cover. I have never, ever seen anyone anywhere use an iPhone that doesn’t have a cover. I’m sure there are a few people who don’t use a cover, so perhaps Steve Jobs should shell out for those 3 people and the other 100 million can stop whining.

      • Mark Brew

Utter rubbish, I have never used a cover with any of my iphones and know few people that do.

If the phone requires a cover, it should be shipped with it – not sold as n accessory.

I’d send out the $1 bumpers for free. I would NOT charge $30 to fix my company’s mistake on an expensive phone the customer has already paid for. I would also apologize, and get my people to work on fixing the problem on a more permanent basis.

      • Baldur Ágústsson

We, the Apple congregation, have been buying their products at inflated prices for years, not only because they look smart and function well but because to us they represent perfection. We do not mind Steve and the other owners getting wealthy because they have given us that feeling – and product. We all know anyone can make a mistake or a design flaw. But if the trust and feeling of perfection is taken away in the response and Apple´s customer attitude we will not be seen dead with any of their products.
Apple do not really have a choice – that is if they want to survive. They have to maintain – and be seen to maintain their commitment to perfection. Appollogise unreservedly, recall all 4-phones, or offer new upgraded units. This may well cost them every penny they intended to make on this phone – but, so be it. This is not the time to haggle or plan how to get away cheaply. This is the time for customer respect, humility and hope for survival.
The suggestion that a free rubber grip is the remedy is as vulgar as repairing a Rolls Royce with duct tape – and equally unbecoming of both companies.

    • DeadCell

That is the problem though. Apple’s fanbase is completely blind and rabid. They buy Macs at inflated prices (At least double of what a comparable Windows machine would cost) despite proprietary hardware, shoddy software, and a crippled OS. I have always said that the iPhone is good despite Apple, not because of them. The phone isn’t worth the money if you don’t jailbreak it, and it can’t compare with its competitors without it.

Nintendo and Microsoft have a fanbase that will leave them in a minute, and they know it, so they actually have to work for the customer.

      • http://www.thedigitalorchard.ca/ Ted Wood

On just one of your claims… OS X being crippled.

Tell us how, please. Then maybe you’ll have a little credibility.

      • NotRabid

        ^ see rabid fans, lol

      • H.

I seem to remember Adobe dropping Flash support from the iPad for that very reason… ?

      • V

Wow, you really are offbase. APPLE refused to put Flash on the iPad, the iPhone, and the iPod because they see it as a technology on the way out as well as the issue of what a battery drain it is. Not the other way around. In fact Adobe whined, cried, and went complaining to the FCC to try to FORCE APPLE to use Flash.

      • brady

flash isn’t supported by Apple’s phone or iPad because they view it as being unstable in the browser (which is very true – only time my browser crashes on my laptop is when I visit a flash site – safari, firefox, or explorer).

      • H.

“Nintendo and Microsoft have a fanbase that will leave them in a minute, and they know it, so they actually have to work for the customer.”

That pretty much hit the nail on the head. So far, Apple has relied on the loyalty of their fanbase to buy their products for the name rather than the quality of the device. Well shucks, what happens when the Apple fanboys and girls get suspicious?
I am reminded of this particular video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AAa0gd7ClM

      • Videoguy

Comparable windows machine? Name one you would trust to edit a $15,000 Hd video project on…. Just saying. And OS X is not anymore propierity than any other os. Am I blind or rabid?? No I am a professional.

      • Ivan

You’re a tool. A $15K HD video project is a drop in a bucket. You’re not likely even using heavyweight software like anything Autodesk releases, so your little video package (either Adobe or Avid) is going to run just fine on a beefier PC with a comparable price.

Get over yourself, the best GPU that the best Mac Pro has is a Radeon 4870. That’s today, July 2nd, 2010. Apple is selling you a dream.

Post your $15K HD video project if you’re confident a PC can’t do the job just fine.

      • Mark Brew

Agreed. OSX is rarely used for rendering video. editing by amateurs and small firms maybe, but even that is rare in the pro world.

      • yargnad

Here is the Linux video system that Avatar was created with: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/davinci/

Windows has Avid systems which has been used for many of the most successful movies ever. What Final Cut Pro has done is merely make high end video editing more simplified and more accessible, but that doesn’t mean that major productions have not, nor even will not be/en produced on non-OSX systems.

OSX is highly proprietary as it was developed by Job’s at NexT with the same closed system model that Apple uses. NexTstep was ported to the Mac(PPC) as OSX upon his return to Apple as it was originally developed for x86(IBM compatible) architecture. While OSX uses some open source code it is itself proprietary to the bone, as much as Windows is.

      • Videoguy

I have an intel core2 duo, DDR ram, pcie video card, sat hard drives and burners with USB keyboard and mouse. Unix based virus free os without a shotty registry or fragile code as part of the base system. Very well built. What part of this is propierity? Is windows open source? Hmmm

      • Videoguyhata

So.. what you’re saying is that… you have an intel core2 duo, only about 6 years old now, DDR ram, when we have DDR3, Sweet Sata hard drive and burners with USB KEYBOARD AND MOUSE!! Wow, i didn’t have those 10 years ago. As for the graphics card you’re only about 3-4 years behind so i can’t rag on you to much.

If i wanted to I could get a FREE operating system based on the UNIX operating system which is hardly virus free, called LINUX.. look it up.

Here is the source to the linux/unix viruses.
        http://www.claymania.com/unix-viruses.html
ooh, and i believe one of the first viruses was created for unix based machines.

Sure there are more viruses for windows, but that doesn’t mean that your “unix” machine is virus free.

Please get your facts straight before posting ignorant comments.

      • helpmehout

What program should he use to edit HD video in LUNIX? A crappy one. Window FTW.

      • james kikon

Yeah. Apple users are so clinked to Apple like blind faith, and the worst is that they brag about it too. I agree they make good looking products but there so many other too, a lot cheaper, better …et al.

LOL . I liked this “Nintendo and Microsoft have a fanbase that will leave them in a minute, and they know it, so they actually have to work for the customer.”

      • brady

i’d love to see a comparable windows machine. there’s no such thing. because apple has a closed architecture and controls the components, a “comparable” Windows machine won’t perform as well because it’s simply not as integrated and also is not made with the same quality of parts. Maybe there is a premium for an Apple computer, but it’s not as large as people try to claim. There’s a lot of little things you get with an Apple, not to mention the software that comes pre-loaded that you’d pay a pretty penny to get on a windows machine.

      • bophus

you can not be serious with this comment. “same quality of parts”…..REALLY??? The components in a mac are the same that you can buy at any computer store or online.

My PC, that I built, will smoke any mac, any day of the week. With my solid state hard drives, duel video cards, 16gigs of ram, quad core cpu. You can jump off your fanboy stand now

I am a graphic designer who works on both Macs and PC’s, but my PC handles 90 percent of my workload. Also, a separate PC is my server. When is the last time you were able to add a hard drive to your beloved Mac? I have 4 in my PC (started with 2)….can you add RAM? Replace the drives? not without burning your warranty.

        Dont be stupid dummy.

      • Joel

How much did this big bad PC cost? I guess you are going to say $400. At that level a Mac Pro can meet or exceed any specs you come up with. You think Mac users are living a dream. You PC users are drinking some coolaid too. I’ve used PC for 20 years and when I started using Mac, it was like a breath of fresh air. And no, I didn’t pay out the nose for my Mac either. They are comperable in price. An equally built Dell and Macbook Pro 15″ was only $200 more than the Dell. Your head is in the sand if you think Dell is “high quality”. Come on, be a little more open minded.

      • JayDawg

You obviously have not really worked on a Mac … Because anyone that is even slightly familiar with the Mac knows that the Mac Pros have 4 HDD bays that you can install drives into plus they can come with 2 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5500 series processors
(that’s 8 CPU’s for those math challenged out there). Plus you can stack up to 32 GB of 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM in the 8 available memory slots…
Plus extra slots for up to 4 video cards and two optical drive bays… Really… Look in the mirror… And check your facts before calling someone a dummy.

      • JayDawg

Haha love how people who like macs are voted down here… Even when they aren’t being fanboys… Just pointing out facts ….

      • Mark Brew

My windows machine dual boots into Win 7 and OSX and runs rings around the top of the range Mac Pro in either mode. Cheaper too. Know your apples from your onions

      • yargnad

Do you know that Foxconn makes the motherboards for Apple? Their designs are not even proprietary and Foxconn produces many other motherboards based on those designs that can be bought from nearly any retailer. IMHO, Foxconn is not high end, nor even a particularly popular choice amongst non-Fanbois.

The closed Apple model will never win over the pragmatic crowd, we want to be able to do what we want, when we want with our PCs. I rarely have issues with either Linux, Windows or OSX because I am intimately familiar with the OSes. I constantly push my systems to the brink of their capacity and still don’t suffer any major issues.

If you think Apple is superior because they make the bulk of your choices for you then simply say so. That will always remailn a negative in my book.

      • Ignorance is Bliss

Obviously you have no idea what you’re talking about. Apple’s OS X takes advantage of multithreading. Why is this useful? If something freezes on a mac, you can click on another program, desktop, anything and your system isn’t frozen. Try that on your XP, Vista, or 7. Do you ever wonder why major software designers for video/photo/media programs prefer macs? They run more efficiently. What do I need on my jailbroken 3GS that I don’t already have?

      • Son I am disappoint.

So wait, you’re saying they’re ill informed and you think Windows XP, Vista, and 7 don’t support multithreading?

        You’re clearly very stupid.

      • http://www.apple.com MacFan

Hi, Steve Jobbs here, I just tried all that crap you said on all those versions of Windows and they work really well actually. In fact, Windows just works.
I tried to run your post through my crApple but the algorithm I’ve been using for the last 45 years unexpectedly quit. WTF is that all about?
Anyway, using my trusty slide rule I’ve managed to work out that you’re pig ignorant. Get your head out of your derriere. All of us monks here at schmApple are ashamed of you. Go away.

      • helpmehout

OK. Doesn’t even compare without jailbreaking? I think that’s pretty incorrect. Don’t get me wrong, there is something to be said for open source and freedom, but at the end of the day, open source rarely creates anything has the polish and usability of a product coming from a company like Apple. the Android phone might allow that freedom, but it wouldn’t be any close to competing if huge companies like Google weren’t backing and developing it. They are just removed from the situation a bit which shield’s them from direct heat like apple is taking over their issue. I’m willing to agree that the reception issue sucks and I get the suspicion that they are going to to “fix” it with a software trick… but just because they f-ed up doesn’t mean your correct to make wild assertions based solely in opinion. In terms of units sold they kill all of the other phones. Your mad because it’s not the phone that you like? In the world of business the guys who make the most money win. The important part about that is treating your customer fairly, and honestly which I think we can all agree, Apple is not.

    • Videoguy

They could but to them it’s not a $1 bumper. It’s a $29 bumper. Should the US send everyone a dollar for the poor job the President and Government is doing?

      • brady

I think Apple’s suffering from a lot of bad publicity, and tossing customers a free bumper (sure they charge $29, we all know it costs pennies) would go a long way. Think Tylenol recalling every bottle of Tylenol to ensure customer safety, even though they knew not every bottle was tainted. Sometimes, it’s just the smart thing to do. but in the end – is anyone returning the device? probably not many, so maybe they don’t need to.

      • david

I have been a iphone user since the orig one came out …the iphone 4 is a huge let down the reception is really really shotty and to be perfectly honest the design and os are very behind the times the awaited mutitasking is a joke not mutitaking at all…Im not sure if apple has just just decided that people will buy their crap no matter what because its “apple” but i think they are in for a rude awakening as many poeple like myself are returning iphone 4 and jumping ship from att’s crappy and pricey network …wake up people the arrogance of apple is outrageous…If your gonna talk big produce big not inflated inferior junk

  • Me

    COMMUNISTS!!

  • Number13

Apple’s lucky streak of no earth shaking problems has ended. Let’s see how they handle this PR torpedo because so far they’re off to a really bad start…

Apple has their hands full this time…. nice to see steve sweat this one out…. lmao

Nice job mr. jobs…… your arrogance has finally put you in between a rock and a hard spot…. have fun fighting your way out.

  • Paul

I hope Apple gets sued big time and pays out big bucks on this obvious problem. And maybe this will be the straw that breaks Steve’s back. We can only hope.

    • Uncle Berniencle Bernie

you are too stupid to live

      • Schizoscorpio

Bwahahahahlololol. I was left speechless at that, I’m glad you put a voice to my pain :)

    • Jobs a GONNA

“I hope Apple gets sued big time and pays out big bucks on this obvious problem.”

…just like they did with their technologically vacant design of the iFAIL 3g + innately broken hardware giving an epidemic of poor signal + call drops(never truely fixed) on NETWORKS worldwide (even though it was ALL USA’s ATTs fault :D )….. + that was only 1 of MANY SERIOUS design fault JUST left + IGNORED for ALL buyers.

Or the other RENOWN iFAIL – the desktop mac whose design ignores the laws of thermodynamics ( the ‘iSHAT’) it WORKS FANTASTICALLY (until you switch on the power and it turns into a portable room heater/grill) – BUTS it LOOKS pretty (UGLY actually) and is VERY SLIM + thats all that matters – you can look at its for HOURS!(until they make the next MODEL EVEN THINNER + MORE $$$$ RAPING!!)

“And maybe this will be the straw that breaks Steve’s back. We can only hope”

      “JIM! He dead already!”

I’ve seen 6 months old EXHUMED corpses with more life – it a medical certainty he has seen his last Xmas – EVEN Jobs won’t be able DENY someone a MUCH FULLER + WORTHIER existence by paying $$$$ to cue jump the donation cue for a SECOND TIME + rob someone of a LIVER to be just another ORGAN for his cancer to RAVAGE away like his original.

  • lk

theory,,,,noted the sim tray is metal and touchs the contacts of the microsim. The outside rim allows a short circuit with your hand to the antenna to the sim card. All they need to do is replace the sim tray with a plastic tray. lk

  • http://www.gritsa.com Charles

I do not think there can be software fix to this problem. In most likelihood they are going to leave it the way it is, or distribute free bumpers if things go worse.

  • iPhoned

From the Apple inside, having seen thousands of A.C. docs, been trained by the engineers who write them and knowing Apple, I would bet, that is NOT an Apple Care document. Apple would NEVER word a document that way, it’s not up to Apple standards, not even close. At BEST it’s notes from a meeting, or an email from a manager summarizing. Don’t believe every so-called leak some know nothing site feeds you.

    • Deanjo

I completely agree. I have seen many (probably in the thousands) apple internal documents and the internal terminology on this document is different then pretty much any apple document I have ever seen. I used to be a tier 2 support rep at one time and this document looks nothing like an official document. Apple documents do not use bold and caps to emphasize points. Nor do they use the terminology “escalate to” for tier 1 reps. Cases are “transferred” to tier 2 (aka Product Specialists). Tier 2 then can “escalate” to engineering but the customer themselves never get to talk to engineering themselves. As far as applecare goes Tier 2 is end of the line for customer contact. Futher more there is no specific models mentioned. Apple is very specific in it’s internal kbase articles. Also the word “probe” is not a word that Apple uses. Official apple SOP’s look very different then this “leaked” document. It doesn’t even look like any engineering notes that the tier 2′s see internally.

      • http://www.apple.com MacFan

” I have seen many (probably in the thousands) apple internal documents”
Sure you have. And you still can’t speak English.
“look very different then this”? It’s THAN!
“there is no specific models mentioned”?? It’s “there are no…” dammit.
But I guess we here at shApple are so darn tootin’ kewl we don’t care if you can spel propar. Or wash. Or stuff.
        Love you bye!
        St. Steve

  • http://www.limelemur.com/ Mitchell Edwards

Noticed that if you mention that the problem is not as bad as gadget sites are making out then your comment gets seriously disliked, is the demographic of this site mostly android fans apple haters.

I have the iPhone 4 and it is not been a problem for me.

Like something you use rather than hate something you don’t.

These Apple haters are worse than the fanboys themselves.

    • http://www.apple.com MacFan

Mabye they’re just sick of my evil frApple trolls that live under ever non-Apple device in the world in space waiting for that joyous and glorious day when they can crank up that oh-so-smug smile I sold them for c. $3k and leap out to proclaim “Should have got a Apple!”

  • Zeh

How easy is to create a hoax these days…

  • D

I myself have never had a real problem with any Apple products that I have bought until I got the iPhone 4. Im gonna keep it because I love it and to me, its worth getting the ($30) bumper if you want it that bad.

It is incredibly unfair pricing and totally exposing of how big of a douche Steve Jobs really is, and I die a little bit inside everytime I have to pay for anything with the Apple name, however I love their products and dont have a track record of problems with them like I do with PCs. Sooooooooooo, yeah!

Thank you for your time, and have a nice day! : )

    • D

oh and P.S. the Bumper does work on canceling out the “death grip”….at least for me

  • Press

Guess we will see what they have to say:

    http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE66D5GO20100715

Funny though… Apply stated they could fix a proven Hardware fault with *drumroll* … a SOFTware update.

That in my opinion leaves two options:

a.) They were plainly BS’ing people with complete disregard for any real concerns reported, nd the consumer at the end of the assembly line dishing out quite a bit of $

b.) They obviously don’t know the difference between hardware and software – which makes me wonder how they ever managed to build the thing.

  • Sam

    ok

  • indyCoder

Apple wants to run everything. Steve Jobs needs to act like an adult, the world is not the playground that Jobs lives on.

    Apple’s getting stubborn.
