RIM announces the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and Pearl 3G

So check it out… RIM’s huge BlackBerry hullabaloo, Wireless Enterprise Symposium, or “WES”, officially kicks off tomorrow in sunny Orlando, but that didn’t stop the Waterloo folks from busting out two — count ‘em, two — hot new smartphones prior to all of the festivities. Wanna know what they are? Hit the jump to find out.

BlackBerry loving, code division multiple access junkies rejoice, as today, RIM announced the latest addition to its CDMA BlackBerry portfolio: the BlackBerry Bold 9650. We would love to say we didn’t know the 9650 was coming…but we’d be lying. Here is the skinny on the new addition to the Bold family: CDMA EV-DO world phone with support for HSPA and UTMS (2100 MHz) networks, Wi-Fi b/g, optical trackpad, GPS, 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, 4.4” x 2.4” x .56” and 4.8 oz., 512 MB of flash memory, microSDHC card support up to 32 GB, 1400 mAhr battery, and BlackBerry OS 5 — the press release did not list a processor clock speed. The new handset will be available in the U.S. in May. Not exactly the most  earth-shattering announcement, but hey… it’s something.

Then there’s the Pearl 3G. If the Bold 9650 was a phone we could see coming from miles away, the Pearl 3G could be seen from the exosphere. Just a touch smaller than the original Pearl 8100 at 108mm x 50mm x 13.5mm, the 3G is said to offer, “uncompromising performance and top–of-the-line features,” which include: 360×400 display, 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, Wi-Fi b/g/n (a RIM first), GPS with BlackBerry Maps, 256MB of flash memory, microSDHC support up to 32GB, 1150 mAhr battery, and BlackBerry OS 5.0 — all of which is kept purring by a 624MHz processor. The Pearl 3G will be available with a SureType keypad (model 9100) as well as with a traditional T9 keypad (model 9105). Why is RIM just now making a smartphone with a T9 keypad? According to RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis, “more than three-quarters of the people in the global mobile phone market are still buying handsets with a traditional alphanumeric keypad, we think the new BlackBerry Pearl 3G addresses a substantial market opportunity. It allows consumers to upgrade their traditional mobile phone to a full-featured, easy-to-use and fashionable 3G BlackBerry smartphone [...] while maintaining a handset design and layout that is familiar and comfortable.” The Pearl 3G will be available for a multitude of carriers starting in May.

We’ve got the official press releases linked up for you below.

that explaines why they are working on a Clamshell 9670.
smart move. the mere fact that 3/4 of the market is still using dumb phones, and lots of them will move to this platform if it gives em the same conveniences found on a simple 9 key phone

No wonder their company seems to be doomed to failure and wandering through the market with blinders on. Look at this quote about the reasoning for creating the Blackberry Pearl 9105 (Pearl with T9 keyboard)

    Quote:
According to RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis, “more than three-quarters of the people in the global mobile phone market are still buying handsets with a traditional alphanumeric keypad, we think the new BlackBerry Pearl 3G addresses a substantial market opportunity. It allows consumers to upgrade their traditional mobile phone to a full-featured, easy-to-use and fashionable 3G BlackBerry smartphone [...] while maintaining a handset design and layout that is familiar and comfortable.”

Now, let me ask you. Do you think 75% of phones sales are T9 keyboard because people PREFER them? … or would common sense tell you that they buy them because they are attached to the cheapest of cheap phones that are available?

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the price has EVERYTHING to do with it. So, they are developing a product that isn’t needed in the marketplace. Why? Because their company can’t understand the simple difference between correlation and causation when it comes to research? That is sad.

No wonder they think that their company will be perfectly fine continuing on with developing an OS that is over 10 years old now.

What about the slider? What about some other large-screen devices – Storm 3 anyone? Are these the only “new” devices coming to WES?

A Pearl? Really – c’mon RIM – this is weak. The 9650 is a Tour which got its scroll mouse replaced with an optical mouse. So eseentially, not much a difference here.

Move on folks – nothing to see here. I like my 8520 but not enough so far to see the need to upgrade to OS 5.0 that I can see.

Sorry, – above memo should say – “…not enough so far to see the need to upgrade to OS 6.0…”.

The 320X240 screen would be burried under the new interface of OS 6.0 and I’d rather keep it simple with OS 5.0 unless I could upgrade to something larger with more real estate to play with and gave me the opportunity to have touch capability.

I found this phone in a bar, I asked if anyone lost it, Nothing! I took it home and went into their Facebook account and Nothing again! I then checked out one of my favorite sites,”Two Girls and a Cup” and guess what? Just like all the BlackBerry Phones….Same Old S–T!!So I took it back to the bar and dropped it in the urinal where I found it!

Can somebody tell me why RIM didn’t announce the next OS or, at least, the Storm 3/Slider/whatever its name is? Two months or less, Apple is going to announce the new iPhone and they stand up with an updated Tour version and with a Pearl? No offense RIM, I love you, but you are stupid if you’re letting Apple win this. And again, I’m an iPhone 3GS user JUST FOR MOBILE SAFARI! I would’ve thrown away my iPhone if any BlackBerry would’ve get closed to what Mobile Safari offers.

Blackberry is” closed” to anything new. I’m leaving BB for the Incredibe at the end of the week and I will not look back! Blackberry is like a cable DVR trying to compete with TVO????

  • MicroNix

I’m pretty sure one of these looks just like the BB I had 5 years ago. Rehash of the same look and style. Boring!

RIM have released a couple of decent phones for the real world, not a bunch of iPhone obsessed geeks. That’s the millions of people that still use phones to chat with actual human beings rather than wasting their time playing games.

If you check out their promo video you’ll see the Pearl is targeted at girls, many of whom probably wouldn’t be seen dead with an iPhone (nor with any guy that carries one), and for whom a phone is a fashion accessory.

The pink Pearl even appeals to my feminine side.

OS 6 was announced and will be available in the summer.

Since RIM generally announces phones rather than OS, you can be fairly certain OS 6 will be attached to their latest hardware. Reading between the lines that will be the new slider Storm.

What will you lot find to whine about when RIMs browser is faster than Safari?
