Epix fail: AT&T issues OTA Samsung Epix update to fix crashing problem, causes freezing problem

Software

Some time ago, AT&T realized it had a bit of an issue on its hands with the Samsung Epix. A “Slog Dump issue” in fact. As exotic as that sounds, it pretty much means the phone would continuously crash with the pop up message “This is forced SLOG DUMP”. After months of hounding from users, AT&T finally pushed out an update to the bizarre issue last week and all was right again in the world of QWERTY Windows Mobile phones. Or not. While AT&T did resolve the Slog Dump error with its OTA update, it also brought about a new problem that is just as severe — many are reporting the Epix now freezes on a daily basis when attempting to dial out. Ouch. Are you an Epix owner affected by all this craziness? Let us know how things are going in the comments section and head on over to the AT&T forum to read more about the issues.

Thanks, Amir!

I figured that the Epix would be a great phone since the Blackjack I and II were pretty solid. Wow, I learned the hard way, the function I most enjoyed was the optical mouse. Finally I spent more money and bought the Nokia E71-2 and do not regret it!! Plus most people are paying $30+ for a data package and I am only paying $10 a month and do hot have to put with all that ATT Media Net nonsense. It feels good to be free!!!

    • http://att still got and epix

had my epix i had four of this epix and all of the touch screen stop working and go to the aglin screen and stay there and cantt use it now i really hate this phone

  • motomann

    Samsung sucks!!Cheap build quality!

I actually upgraded my wife from a Blackjack to an Epix and upgraded myself from a Blackjack II to a Blackberry Bold. Needless to say, two weeks into the Slog Dump hassles, I returned the Epix and now we are both on Blackberry Bolds. We LOVE them and since the Blackberry unlimited plan was no more than the PDA unlimited plan for the Epix, I say phooey on Windows Mobile.

No problems with optical mouse. Have you ever tried it on a bright sunny day. Its a no go. The sun cancels it out. Also good luck trying to see the screen.

I’ve had problems since day one with the Samsung Epix. I had to change my voice mail to pick up after 6 rings and that only give me two rings to answer the phone because the first 4 rings it doesn’t acknowledge.

Wifi was one reason i chose this phone and it was a bear to get working. It works only half the time.

Email was another feature, and I still have problems with that time to time where it doesn’t send out emails.

ATT Navigator nice feature I haven’t had much problems with. Except first setting it up asked for a pw and i had no idea what to put in for it. Tech support helped.

Also had to tweek the settings on the phone for it to behave properly. Especially the annoying buzz tap.

Side scroll bar can’t use the stylus to scroll with it. Use the optic mouse to scroll.

Keyboard with virtual keyboard. I should of went with a full screen and the heck with the keyboard.

One thing i really despise is if you don’t lock the screen, i use the power button to
suspend it and when you get a call or use blue tooth it unlocks the phone and you have to quickly lock (suspend) the phone or it opens apps like crazy with out you knowing.

Another bad thing. If you use Bluetooth and wifi and keep those features on it drains the battery’s life real quick. Took me a bit to figure out why the battery was only lasting a day and a half until i turned those off when not using them.

Lock ups are another problem that occur. They just happen out of the blue. There’s not really a way to reproduce the lock ups either.

I really, really tried to like this phone, but its just not working for me. I feel i got the royal screw over especially how much ATT charged me even with the rebate. And now prices dropped big time on this model.

I had a sony ericsson w580i and was loving it until it died prematurely. Red flashing light of death. ATT Wanted to sell it to me more than what i originally got the w580i for. I wanted to get the iPhone, but they wouldn’t let me get it for the $199 price due to my contract not being up yet. They told me to come back for the iphone in two months. They would not even work a deal with the iPhone Refurb’s on their site. So I didn’t want to be without a phone and was pressured in to getting the Samsung Epix.

Last thing that really blows is the fact that yahoo messenger app comes with it, ATT charges them as texts. If a person has unlimited internet plan, what the heck do you need to charge for yahoo im’s as texting. I swear anything to make a buck. Yes, I know use the web browser to get around it, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having the app. Yeah $5 extra for unlimited texting another $60 a year. No, no thanks, don’t think so.

Okay I’m done ranting my frustrations.

I have owned the EPIX for four months NO problems,The optical mouse works great.Tricked it out with stuff from Mysamsungepix.com .The real problem is all companies (Htc,Samsung Motorola) are making to many devices. Slow down and make them correctly the first time does anyone realy use a flip phone with a 1 meg camera anymore. start making phones like the Iphone great web browsing exp .I am looking forward to the touchpro 2 or the iphone 3g qwerty.

I own the epix… It’s my company device. I’ve never had an issue with my phone before aside from the ring to answer time. I had to extend my ring on my phone as well but other than that… no issue.

The business I work in, no one seems to be happy with any phone. But no one seems to say anything to the companies that manufacture these phones. It seems like there is a big big gap between the two but Retail and Customer Svc seem to get the sh*t end of the stick more often than not.

I just got off the phone with samsung because i lost my stylus (why it doesn’t come with 2 like most pda phones? no idea) and I was trying to see if there was another stylus available seeing as the retail locations don’t carry them… Well it appears that Samsung doesn’t either… Way to go!

  • Luke

I own an Epix and have for about 6 months now. I have tweaked and fixed this phone to where it is the best smart phone I have ever owned. If you by a windows mobile smart phone and expect it to perform at peak out of the box, your an idiot. I loved my treo, but they don’t update their software enough, the iphone is a useless brick IMO, and blackberries have their share of issues as well. The Epix is definitely not a “starter” smartphone, so if you are looking for that, go buy an iphone so you can buy useless applications from the isuckstore…

  • silljd

Bought the epix May 12th. No problems. What freezes? Phone works very well, and the optical mouse is use, not to mention the stylus option for very quick office editing. This is a business work horse phone, not for children, web surfing addicts get your IPhone, serious businesss pro’s, you need to check this phone out, very nice. ****stars

  • AT&T Rep

I agree with the above statement…
It’s a great phone. The greatest ever owned by me.

If you guys think the epix is so bad u obviously haven’t played with the fuze. what a let down by htc

    • rzacek

I had a Fuze for about 5 days and that wasonly due to the fact that I was out of town. What a piece of crap, locks, freeses, drops Oh My.

The Epix is also a POS. I am a Samsung business telephone system dealer. Their busines systems are rock solid, however their windows smartphones have a lot of issues regarding dropped calls in my area. In all honesty I believe it has a lot to do with windows mobile.

    *Update*

Samsung has released an updated fix for the phone, and from what I have been reading it has taken care of all the bugs so far including what the FOTA caused

    here is the link

    http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa/jsp/faqs/faqs_view.jsp?SITE_ID=22&PG_ID=557&PROD_SUB_ID=558&PROD_ID=1343&AT_ID=151654

This phone rocks, I don’t regret getting it!

  • Xman 4 Ever

Some of the previous pg1 comments have to be from users that have never owned the epix or are IPhone homers….I have had this phone for awhile and no issues at all, this is a business phone powerhouse. Hopefully there will be a 6.5 upgrade!

  • Don

Owned my Epix for about four months now.

No problems. Fast phone, has everything I need. I’ve tweaked it extensively – but that’s part of the fun of having a PDA, IMHO.

It’s too bad about the slog dump on some of the phones. I haven’t had that problem. The phone got solid reviews, generally – some didn’t like the chunkiness of the phone, others didn’t like the crapware or optical mouse. To each their own.

  • Mike

I just got my propel pro and I have played with it in the ATT store. Same problem. This is why I returened the Epix and got iPhone. Now I have to returrn the Propel Pro and probably go with Nokie 71x due to iPhone not having Task on their phones. I got a cheap app for $10 but it still does not remind or buzz on the due dates. An Apple prolem-no fix yet. now I am leaning towards Nokia and no more Samcung phones-too much propatary stuff.

  • carson

its not just the epix, i just got rid of my blackjack 2 because of freezing and auto reseting im begining to think its samsung or windows mobile that is responsible.

  • Sassypants

Is there really no fix to the Samsung Propel Pro ascending ring? …STILL? This phone has been out for months! And from what I have seen online, no one seems to “like” it.

I have limited knowledge in phone hacking, but I KNOW this problem CAN be fixed. Some genius cracked the Epix problems, long before Samsung even acknowledged the issues. So what makes the Propel Pro any different? I know you phone hackers out there are smarter than these “geniuses” at Samsung. Please be my hero, and find a way to alter it. I love this phone. This is the ONLY thing I HATE about it. It pisses me off every time my phone rings. …assuming I ever hear it ring.

I have this question: There is a code to hack into the volume controls, and access the jackfrost configuration. …I have done it… I just don’t know what the code means. Can it be solved in that portion of the software? I have even contacted the manufacturer of the amp that projects the audio for rings and speakerphone (Maxim). They said unless I knew more about the product, they couldn’t tell me anything.

I have spent at least 7 hours on the phone trying to find an answer. That’s not including my MANY late nights trying to find anything online. Five hours of that time was wasted on the phone with Samsung.

First Samsung tells me, it isn’t a bug, it was meant to be a permanent ascending ring. So I ask, “Then why is there even an “option” on the phone to set it to a standard ring? If it was programmed that way, the option on the phone would not exist. Right along with the options to change the ringer volume. …Thousands of people have complained about it. So why haven’t you released the update?”

    I then get this…

“We are working on a solution to the problem.” …WAIT. So now it wasn’t an intentional setting? “You just told me it was intentionally designed that way, now you say it wasn’t?” This is the answer I got… …. ….. ….. …. ….nothing. Silence. I put him in a corner, and he had no response on his little que cards that confronted the problem.

I urge everyone of you poor Propel Pro owners to call Samsung, and say exactly what I said. If it becomes an unavoidable issue, someone will have to fix it. We just have to make it a large enough splash.

Like I said, I know one of you phone geniuses has the talent and knowledge to tackle this. I believe in you!!!!!!!!!!

    I won’t give up.

  • http://www.kandynet.net Pramod

I have upgraded to Epix from BlackJackII couple of months ago. As almost all of you guys, I have all tose problems. First, GPS didn’t work, Slog Dumps, battery drain…. etc..
I did the ROM Flash update from Samsung ( I think) and most of the problems got fixed.
ones in a while my phone shut off by it self.. but I am working on it.

I have had Blackberry Perl, BlackJack I, II, SE P990i, HTC, iPhone 3G, Nokia PDA phones… so far, Epix is the best PDA phone I have ever had.

As Luke said, Epix is not for the starters.

  • A. Szymel

I have owned the Epix since 12/08. At that time I debated getting the iphone. I was talked out of it. The epix had everything I needed and wanted. The problems started about 2 weeks later. The phone freezing up, turning off by it self, intermittently running very slow, battery drain ect. To this day I have had 4 replacement phones and all with the same problem. Dealing with customer service is always a nightmere. I would have to be on the phone for a minimum 2 hours being transfered multiple times. Now my Epix is almost a 1 year old the power button and the volume button on the side of the phone don’t work. Iphone hear I come.

  • WishItWorked

How I wish I had seen this site before I bought mine own back in March of 09. I am on my 3rd, the kindly folks at ATT being dead set on continuing to replace my &^&@$!! Epix with other peoples’ problematic devices rather than on sending me a new one. Heck, from the responses above, sounds like a crapshoot whether you get a new one or a “reconditioned” one.
Problems from the start. It freezes. Voice Command stopped working. Vibration thingie randomly stops and then starts back working again. Mouse died. Calls randomly placed on hold “can you hear me??? Helllo!?”. That’s the latest one. Sigh. Piece of poo.
Infinite dollars to keep releasing new models but insufficient dollars to do it right the first time.

I love my Epix! I had the slog dump….applied the update and all has been well ever since.
