These creepy aquatic robot snakes are straight out of ‘The Matrix’

Robotic Swimming Snake Video

If you thought the Google-owned Boston Dynamics made the world’s most frightening robots, think again. Via Gizmodo, a new collaboration between the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Kongsberg Maritime, and Norwegian oil and gas company Statoil has produced a robotic aquatic snake that really does look like something out of The Matrix. Called the Eelume, the robot was designed to examine and repair underwater structures such as oil wells. This will save money since right now even small underwater repairs are handled by large and expensive vessels that should really only be used to make major repairs.

“Eelume robots will be permanently installed on the seabed and will perform planned and on-demand inspections and interventions,” explains Kongsberg Maritime. “The solution can be installed on both existing and new fields where typical jobs include; visual inspection, cleaning, and adjusting valves and chokes. These jobs account for a large part of the total subsea inspection and intervention spend.”

Here is a video of the robot snake in action:

Given its remarable flexibility and maneuverability, it’s easy to see how this robot will be very useful for making repairs deep under the ocean.
