You should spend 8 minutes of your life watching the PlayStation 2 startup animation one trillion times

I’m not normally the kind of person to tell other people how to spend their time — mainly because I don’t like people telling me that spending a Saturday night yelling a various digitally rendered characters on a computer screen is a waste — but if you could lend me a little over eight minutes of your time today I think you’ll walk away happy. That is, assuming you loved the PlayStation 2 as much as most gamers did.

A YouTuber by the name of Mehkel is a pretty big fan of the PlayStation 2, or at least it seems that way based on his desire to watch the console’s startup sequence many, many times. How many? Well, not to get too crazy here, but it’s probably more times than you’ve ever seen and/or heard it before. By starting with one loop of the startup animation and multiplying it by four each time, Mehkel has crafted a video that includes over one trillion of the opening sequences.

After the first few thousand of the animations, the dark background of the screen tends to muddy up the visual appeal, but the iconic sound effects are still very much intact and get progressively more disturbing with each passing round.

The video took over two weeks to make, as Mehkel explains in the clip’s description, which is a sizable amount of time to dedicate to such a project. I have to say, I’m not entirely sure if it was worth it, but I’m glad this video exists so I guess the answer to that is “yes.”
