Nokia makes fun of Ellen’s blurry Samsung selfie from the Oscars

In return for all of the money Samsung spent on the 86th annual Academy Awards on Sunday night, host Ellen DeGeneres took photos with a Galaxy smartphone on stage throughout the night, and while mingling with the star-studded audience (yes, we know she also posted photos with her own iPhone while backstage — no one cares). One of the resulting photos she posted to Twitter using the phone quickly became the most retweeted photo of all time. While that image came out just fine, another one DeGeneres tweeted while on stage came out a bit blurry, and Nokia quickly used the photo as an opportunity to remind the world that its camera phones are among the best in the world. World’s best Windows Phones now free if you trade in your iPhone

World’s best Windows Phones now free if you trade in your iPhone

Windows Phone is a platform on the rise and now curious iPhone owners can get their chance to own one of the world’s best Windows Phones for free. Microsoft has announced that it will give anyone who trades in their iPhone 4s either a Nokia Lumia 1020 or a Lumia 1520 for free with a two-year service contract with AT&T. This seems like a terrific deal for AT&T subscribers who are curious about trying a different smartphone since the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520 are terrific devices that have some of the world’s best smartphone cameras. And when you consider that Nokia first launched the Lumia 1020 last year with a $300 on-contract price tag then you can see that you’re getting major value here. The major downside is that Windows Phone still faces a significant app gap with iOS but Microsoft is working overtime to get that fixed.

The best camera phone in the world just got even better

The topic of “best camera phone in the world” is debated often, but it really shouldn’t be — that title goes to the Nokia Lumia 1020, with its 41-megapixel camera. According to one expert, the Lumia 1020 is the closest thing smartphones have to a modern DSLR, having recently crushed the iPhone 5s in a head-to-head showdown. Well guess what, Nokia fans: As good as it was, the Lumia 1020’s camera just got even better. More →

Lumia 1020 camera crushes iPhone 5s in expert review

Apple’s iPhone 5s can certainly hold its own against most of the competition out there when it comes to camera quality, but Nokia’s Windows Phone-powered Lumia 1020 is the undisputed king of camera phones. We couldn’t believe how impressive the 1020’s camera was when we reviewed the handset last summer, especially in low light. It has now been nearly six months since we first tested the phone and there still isn’t anything else on the market that even approaches the Lumia 1020. One expert recently decided to pit the 1020 and Apple’s iPhone 5s against several DSLR cameras to see how far mobile cameras have come. In doing so, he also obviously compared the two devices themselves. More →

Top 10 Best Smartphones 2013

The best smartphones in the world, 2013 edition (part 3)

The best smartphones in the world, 2013 edition (part 3)

By on December 19, 2013 at 11:00 AM.

Part one of our three-part series on the best smartphones of 2013 listed the best smartphone design, performance and display of the year, and then part two covered the best fit and finish, the best smartphone value and the best phablet of 2013. Now, in out the third and final installment of our series, we cover the biggest categories: Best Android Phone, Best Windows Phone and Best iOS Phone, and Best Overall. Each category had competition that was more intense than ever before (especially the iOS phone category, which had competition for the first time ever) and picking winners certainly wasn’t easy. Picking an overall winner for the title of Best Smartphone of 2013 was particularly difficult since so many great handsets launched this year, but there was one phone that managed to edge out the competition (and it has the sales numbers to prove it). With that, it’s time to wrap up our three-part series on the best smartphones of 2013. More →

Nokia Lumia 1020 Price Cut $199.99

Microsoft, AT&T slash Lumia 1020 price by $100

Microsoft, AT&T slash Lumia 1020 price by $100

The world’s best Windows Phone is now priced to compete with rival flagship smartphones. Microsoft announced on Friday that both it and AT&T have knocked $100 off the Lumia 1020’s price for customers who buy the device through their stores. To sweeten the deal even further, Microsoft says that it will throw in a free Nokia camera grip for the device for a limited time for all customers who buy the phone through a Microsoft store. The Lumia 1020 is an extremely impressive device with an industry-best 41-megapixel PureView camera, but its high $300 price tag has led to mixed reports of early sales so far. In addition to its 41-megapixel camera, the device features a 4.5-inch AMOLED display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 32GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM and Windows Phone 8.

Canaccord: Galaxy S4, Lumia 1020 selling well, BlackBerry 10 sales ‘weak’

The Lumia 1020 may only be available for $300 on one carrier but that doesn’t seem to be stopping it from posting modestly healthy sales. Per Barron’s, Canaccord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley has come out with his latest survey of smartphone sales and has found that both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Nokia Lumia 1020 have been doing well over the past month. While the Galaxy S4’s success isn’t surprising, it is interesting to hear that the Lumia 1020 is reportedly doing well even though it’s starting out at a higher price point than rival devices. What’s more, Walkley sees the Lumia brand as a whole having a halo effect for Windows Phone 8, which finally seems to be gaining traction. More →

Video: Microsoft unleashes its best Lumia ad yet

Microsoft’s marketing department has really stepped up its game since the dark days of Surface break dancing. The newest Microsoft-produced ad for Nokia’s Lumia 1020 brilliantly addresses the inadequacies of most smartphone cameras by showing lots of unhappy parents storming the stage at their children’s dance recital to get decent pictures of them with their iPhones and Android devices. The only people who aren’t taking part in the chaos are two parents who are calmly sitting in the back row with their Lumia 1020 and are happily snapping pictures of the performance with the device’s 41-megapixel camera. While Microsoft’s ads have been very hit-or-miss of late, the new Lumia ad falls squarely in the “hit” category and could really change some minds about the worth of Windows Phone. The full ad follows below. More →

AT&T drops Lumia 1020 price to $199.99 in small regional promotion

We had a lot of great things to say about Lumia 1020 when we reviewed it last month, however the phone’s $300 price tag was a tough pill to swallow. Nokia’s cutting-edge 41-megapixel PureView camera likely warrants the steep price, but in a market where Nokia didn’t gain much traction with $100 flagship phones, $300 seemed crazy. While we don’t have any hard sales numbers yet, early signs have been mixed. Amazon recently dropped the price of the Lumia 1020 to $249.99 from its $299.99 launch price after just two weeks, and the phone’s position on Amazon’s best-sellers list hasn’t budged. Now, BGR has learned that AT&T has given Nokia’s new Windows Phone an even steeper price cut in several markets. More →

After just two weeks, Nokia Lumia 1020 price already slashed by Amazon

Nokia’s flagship Lumia 1020 has been on the market for just two weeks and the phone’s price has already been slashed by leading smartphone retailer Amazon. The new 41-megapixel Lumia 1020 launched on July 26th and while we found it to be the most impressive Windows Phone to date when we reviewed the Lumia 1020 last month, the phone’s $300 price tag was troubling. This past weekend, just two weeks after the phone debuted, the Lumia 1020’s price was cut by Amazon from $299.99 to $249.99 on contract. The Lumia 1020 features a 4.5-inch AMOLED display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 32GB of storage, 2GB of RAM and Nokia’s 41-megapixel PureView camera. At the time of this writing, the handset was ranked at No.13 on the list of Amazon’s best-selling contract phones, behind older devices like the Samsung Galaxy SIII, the Galaxy Note II and Nokia’s own Lumia 928.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Strategy Analysis

Does Nokia have a backup plan if its bet on camera quality falls through?

Does Nokia have a backup plan if its bet on camera quality falls through?

Nokia’s bets on camera quality haven’t paid off much in the past but the company has never tried anything nearly as ambitious as the 41-megapixel camera that comes with its new flagship Lumia 1020. While the new device and its camera have received accolades for innovation, it’s not yet clear whether smartphone buyers will switch over from Android and iOS just because of a high-quality camera, especially when the device it comes with carries an on-contract price of $300. FastCompany reports that Nokia seemingly doesn’t have much of a backup plan in place if its latest attempt at wooing smartphone buyers with an industry-best camera flops yet again. More →
