Remember when the horrors of 2016 gave way to the bright promise of 2017? The future seemed so exciting, filled with optimism and and kindness, rational thought and reasoned decisions. Well, it’s April, and McDonalds sauce from 1998 is one of the hottest selling items on eBay. Only it’s not actually the sauce, it’s photos of the sauce, and one such photo has a current bid of over $50,000. Welcome to 2017.

It all started with a new episode of Rick and Morty which was launched as an April Fools’ Day surprise by Adult Swim. In the show, a character expresses their love of a special sauce McDonalds offered for a very limited time back in 1998 to coincide with the release of Disney’s Mulan. The condiment, labeled as Mulan Szechuan Teriyaki Dipping Sauce, instantly became a top search term on Google and that’s when the eBay insanity began.

A listing posted by someone with the eBay username “DefinitelyNoteDanHarmon” — Dan Harmon is one of the creators of Rick and Morty — listed a photo of the sauce “printed shoddily on plan paper and sent in an ordinary envelope.” It gained a lot of traction, not to mention many, many presumably fake bids. It was taken down for a short while before reappearing, and now has a price $50,100 as of this writing.

The auction also cryptically states that “there may or may not be other things that happen to you because you win this auction,” leading many fans of the show to assume there’s some kind of secret prize for being the top bidder. All proceeds for the auction will go to Habitat for Humanity, according to the listing.
