Controversial media personality and automotive journalist Jeremy Clarkson may not be on Top Gear anymore, but he’s still giving us the goods on some of the world’s most impressive cars. In a recent column for the Sunday Times, Clarkson gets back down to basics and gives us his list of the top 10 cars of 2016 that warrant your undivided attention.

While lists that tend to rank items like the best cars tend to engender a whole lot of debate and disagreement, it’s hard to argue with Clarkson’s list here. Especially in an era where car advancements tend to hit the market at a furious clip, it takes much more these days for a car to warrant and deserve the spotlight. As Clarkson tells it: “A car must have something to elevate it from the norm. It may be speed, or cleverness, or the fizz, or styling to die for. But there must be something. Something that makes you excited every time you climb inside. Because if it doesn’t, then it’s just a tool. And if it’s just a tool, you may as well use the bus.”

As a quick aside, Clarkson’s quip above serves to explain the passionate and somewhat curious following that Tesla attracts. The fit and finish one finds on a Tesla, for example, is hardly anything to write home about, but the fact that it’s electric and that it comes with some pretty nifty software features is enough to excite its users every time they step inside.

All that said, let’s jump right to the list and see what types of cars got Clarkson pumped up over the last few months. What makes this list particularly worth paying attention to is that it’s not simply a list of supercars that will set you back $300,000. Sure, Clarkson has his thing for the Lamborghinis and Ferraris of this world, but he also includes much more affordable cars from the likes of Ford and Volvo.

The full list reads as follows:

  1. Mazda MX-5 2.0 Sport Recaro
  2. Alfa Romeo 4C
  3. Mercedes-AMG GT S
  4. Ford Focus RS
  5. Ford Mustang GT
  6. Volvo XC90 D5 AWD
  7. Vauxhall Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTi Tech Line
  8. BMW M2
  9. Ferrari 488 GTB
  10. Lamborghini Aventador
