Tesla Model X unveiled: Meet the ‘uncompromised’ SUV

September 30th, 2015 at 7:45 AM
Tesla Model X Pricing Release Date

Tesla has added an SUV to its fleet in the form of the Model X, a new car that the company is describing as “the SUV uncompromised.” The car’s most striking feature is its Falcon Wings doors that open vertically and “allow easy access to second and third row seats from any parking space.” On the insider, the Model X features all-wheel drive and enough seating space to fit seven adults. The car has a 90 kWh battery that delivers 250 miles of range per charge and it goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 3.2 seconds, with a maximum speed of 155 miles per hour.

Despite this crazy acceleration, the Model X is still designed to be a family car, which is why Tesla wasted no time touting its safety features. Among other things, the Model X has an “almost nonexistent” risk of rollover thanks to its floor-mounted battery that’s designed to lower the car’s center of gravity. It is also constantly scanning its surroundings for potential dangers using camera, radar and sonar systems, and it will automatically apply brakes in case of an emergency.

As you might expect, this car won’t be cheap: Reuters reports the car will cost between $132,000 and $142,000 depending on the model. You can reserve the Model X right now, although you should know that Tesla is estimating the cars won’t be delivered until the second half of 2016.
