Console launches, much like elected officials, never quite live up to their promises. When Sony and Microsoft spoke of all the revolutionary features that would be present on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, we knew we should remain cautiously optimistic until they were actually sitting in our living rooms. As expected, a few of those features weren’t finished in time for launch, but at least for the PS4, Sony says they aren’t dead yet.

When Sony revealed the PS4 in early 2013, the console was supposedly going to allow gamers to put their consoles into “suspend mode” while playing a game, keeping the console in a low-power state, and then seamlessly jump back in when they were ready to play again. PS4 owners would also be able to let their friends take their place in a gaming session over the Internet from a second PS4. Neither of these are currently possible.

“Our team has been working on it,” President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida told Kotaku at E3 in regards to a friend taking control of your game. “There are some things that we announced in February of last year that were not planned for the launch timeframe.”

When asked about suspending a game and resuming from sleep mode, the answer was similar: “It’s not ready yet.”

Yoshida says that the team is hard at work on the unreleased features, but he doesn’t know for sure when they’ll see the light of day.
