Nvidia undeterred by gloomy projections, pledges loyalty to Windows RT

July 18th, 2013 at 5:55 PM

Even though manufacturers keep running away from Windows RT, chipmaker Nvidia is sticking by its commitment to make GPUs for devices based on Microsoft’s tablet operating system. Rene Haas, Nvidia’s vice president of computing products, told ComputerWorld this week that his company still believes Windows RT has a bright future ahead of it despite many analysts’ projections that the platform looks like it’s headed for the same graveyard now occupied by webOS and Symbian. In particular, Haas said that he viewed Microsoft’s decision to slash prices on the Surface RT as a positive sign because it meant that more consumers would get to experience the platform.

“We’re very encouraged and excited by the new price point and hope it inspires new sales,” Haas said. “Surface RT is the very beginning of a long process and it’s the first shot in a changing landscape.”

Analyst Jack Gold of J. Gold Associates wasn’t buying Nvidia’s happy talk, however, and told ComputerWorld that the company likely knows it made a bad bet by committing to make GPUs for Windows RT.

“They don’t want to spook the market and say RT sucks and won’t sell,” said Gold, who also accused the company of “blowing smoke” with its rosy assessments.
