Making a Murderer

, the Netflix original true-crime documentary that set off a firestorm of debate regarding the justice system in the United States, is coming back for a second season. For those unfamiliar with the documentary, the engaging series takes an unflinching and thought-provoking look at how a man named Steven Avery may have been sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit, not once, but twice.

In 1985, Avery was convicted of a rape that he didn’t commit, ultimately serving 18 years in prison before DNA evidence exonerated him. Flash forward to 2005 and Avery once again found himself entangled with the Wisconsin justice system, this time for murder. Following a highly publicized trial, Avery was convicted yet again.

To be fair, the evidence pointing to Avery’s guilt is strong, but what makes the documentary so compelling, infuriating and downright addicting is that many of the attorneys, law enforcement officials and investigators involved in the Avery case were shockingly corrupt and unscrupulous. As the documentary masterfully shows, the justice system that should have helped Avery receive a fair trial was instead spearheaded by individuals who seemed intent on convicting Avery at all costs, evidence be damned.

So for anyone who couldn’t get enough of Making a Murderer, which is basically anyone who watched the show, we have new episodes to look forward to.

According to reports, the new episodes may not hone in on new evidence or recent attempts to secure a new trial for Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey, but may instead focus on “Avery’s life post-conviction.”

Netflix hasn’t yet announced a release date for the season 2 premiere, but  we’ll definitely keep you posted once they do.
