MySpace Jumps on the Open Bandwagon

MySpace has just announced that they will be opening up their platform to third party development. That’s right, scantily clad teens and struggling musicians everywhere will now be able to look forward to a flurry of booze mail, sheep throwing and all sorts of other useless junk in their inboxes. Somehow MySpace manages to still hold the virtual heavyweight title as the world’s top social network despite the massive abundance of over-cluttered pages and mindless banter. As king, MySpace will continue to find new ways of milking it for what it’s worth. Opening their network to third party development is just that; a new way for MySpace to deliver ad content and further monetize its member base. Of course that’s the name of the game, so it was only a matter of time before MySpace hopped on the open bandwagon. Developers will be invited to San Fransisco on February 5 to participate in the official launch and observe MySpace execs as they drum out some initial details. COO Amit Kapur has also stated that MySpace’s platform will support Google’s Open Social initiative, but didn’t delve into it any further than that. MySpace apps should pop up relatively quickly following the D-Day event next Tuesday so if you were looking for yet another reason to avoid MySpace like the plague, now you have it.
