The release date for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6s may have been inadvertently leaked by Vodafone this past week. According to Mobile News, which claims to have gotten its hands on an internal Vodafone email, Apple’s next-gen iPhone is slated to be released on Friday, September 25, with pre-orders reportedly scheduled to open up on September 18.

Now given that it’s only early June, any story regarding a specific iPhone release date should of course be taken with a requisite grain of salt. Still, the rumored September 25 release date is certainly plausible. By way of contrast, the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, and iPhone 6 models respectively launched on September 20, September 21, and September 19. That being the case, the rumored release date is well within the realm of reason.

While a few rumors over the past few months have claimed that Apple is hoping to release new iPhone models sometime in August or even as early as July, the typically reliable Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities issued a research note last month stating that we can expect new iPhones to hit stores shelves in September.

On a related note, it’s a safe bet that Apple’s upcoming new iPhones will shatter all previous iPhone sales records. As we detailed last week, the pool of iPhone users ready to upgrade is larger than it’s ever been before. What’s more, given that iPhone owners tend to stay within the confines of the Apple ecosystem, it stands to reason that most iPhone users ready for a new device this year will opt for Apple’s iPhone 6s. Incidentally, Apple just recently tweaked its iPhone trade-in program and is now offering even more money to folks who bring in their used iPhones for credit towards a new one.

As an ‘S’ upgrade, the form factor on Apple’s next-gen iPhone will likely remain the same as what we saw with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Still, we can expect to see some compelling new software and hardware features, including Force Touch functionality, 2GB of RAM, a more reliable Touch ID sensor, a 12 megapixel camera, and what we imagine will be a blazing fast A9 processor.
