Apple relents: iPhone 6 with larger display reportedly due in June 2014

Apple CEO Tim Cook said on the company’s March-quarter earnings call that smartphone vendors have made too many “tradeoffs” with the user experience on handsets with large displays, and he has no interest in making similar sacrifices with the iPhone. Whether or not you agree with Cook’s comments — the market is telling a slightly different story right now — the simple truth is that Apple will not release an iPhone with a larger display until it can find away to stuff it into a more manageable package. But as it turns out, Cook may have just been setting expectations for the upcoming iPhone 5S launch because according to a new report, Apple has already found a way to work a larger display into the iPhone 6 without the “tradeoffs” seen in current phablets, and it’s set to launch next year.

“Our competitors have made some significant tradeoffs in many of these areas to ship a larger display,” Cook said on the earnings call. “We would not ship a larger display iPhone while these tradeoffs exist.” The executive’s comments seem to make it clear that we shouldn’t expect a supersized smartphone screen on the upcoming iPhone 5S, which is expected to launch this fall an incremental update compared to the iPhone 5.

But Cook’s comments may have been intended to prevent prospective iPhone buyers from skipping the iPhone 5S and holding out for something bigger and better. According to a research note sent to clients on Tuesday, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek says Apple is already prepping an iPhone 6 with a larger screen that is set to launch in June 2014.

In the meantime, Misek says the iPhone 5S will feature new color options, an upgraded processor, a better camera and maybe even a fingerprint scanner, Financial Post reports. He also thinks Apple might be ready to unveil a mobile payment tie-in that will use Apple’s Passbook service as its base.

Apple’s iPhone 5S is expected to be released this fall after some internal delays pushed the launch back from the summer months.
