Apple’s (AAPL) iMessage service is currently suffering from a widespread outage. The SMS rival for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users has been suffering from intermittent issues for at least an hour according to emails BGR received from users, and the service appeared to be completely offline at the time of this writing. iMessage, a service similar to Research In Motion’s (RIMM) BBM, allows iOS users to send and receive text messages and photos using data networks and without incurring carrier charges related to SMS. The service was first introduced as part of iOS 5 last year.
