Launching a new flagship smartphone on the same day Samsung released its new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge handsets seemed like a fool’s errand for HTC, and now that the numbers are in, it appears safe to say our assumptions were spot on.
While there’s no question that the HTC One M9 is a fantastic phone, most Android fans didn’t view it as a significant upgrade compared to last year’s One M8. As a result, the new phone hardly provided the sales boost HTC was hoping for, and the company’s revenue plummeted in April.
HTC has released its monthly unaudited revenue figures for April, and it’s not pretty.
The company said that it pulled in NT$13.5 billion last month, or about US$441 million. That figure represents a staggering 38.7% decline from April 2014. And just to add insult to injury, revenue was also down 32.4% from the prior month, when the company’s new flagship phone wasn’t even on sale yet.
The new HTC One M9 launched on April 10th, making it available for two-thirds of the month. Unfortunately for HTC, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge were released on the very same day, and their bold new designs and powerful performance stole the show.
