Twenty years ago marked the downfall of seeing a movie in peace without constantly hearing a cell phone playing Mozart. September 7th marked the 20th anniversary of 15 phone companies signing an agreement to build mobile networks based on the Global System for Mobile (GSM) Communications. Of course, GSM technology has been around longer than 20 years, but this marked the first time that companies agreed to build off the GSM network. Currently, GSM hosts over 2.5 billion accounts world wide, with over seven billion text messages sent a day. GSM cell phones once for the privileged to own (or Zach Morris), are now an essential gadget that nearly everyone carries around in some form or another. Sorry Verizon and Sprint. The whole “World Roaming” thing don’t count.
