The most ironic Google job opening ever

Google Hiring SEO Manager Search Rankings

Does even Google know how its own search algorithms work? We raise this question because Google is looking for an SEO expert to come on board and help Google sites get more organic traffic… from Google. We kid you not.

FROM EARLIER: Brace yourself: Netflix CEO says price increases are coming

A new job posting flagged by Search Engine Land shows that Google is searching for “a Program Manager for Technical SEO” who “will work with cross-functional teams across Marketing, Sales, Product Development, Engineering and more to help drive organic traffic and business growth.” The SEO manager “will take part in website development and optimization, help shape blog and social strategy, improve website code hygiene and define web architecture for international websites.”

This is funny, of course, because Google shouldn’t need additional help getting its own websites to do well on its own search engine. However, there is a possible reason why this job posting makes sense: Google has come under fire from European regulators recently for allegedly gaming its searches to artificially favor its own sites at the expense of its competitors.

If Google is no longer allowed to put its thumb on the scale, it will need to find ways to draw traffic to its own pages organically, which will require some additional work on the SEO front. All the same, we can’t help but look at this job posting and smile at the irony.
