BlackBerry fans have made it pretty clear to the company that they want it to stop trying to be like iOS and Android, which is why its most recent phones have emphasized its famous physical QWERTY keyboards while also bringing back the classic BlackBerry trackpad and function keys. And now BlackBerry has just made a new announcement that will make BlackBerry fans even more nostalgic for the company’s glory days of 2007 — the return of iconic old-school BlackBerry game Brick Breaker.
“Brick Breaker, the addictive game that BlackBerry fans will surely remember, is back,” the company writes. “And rather than wearing out your keyboard, now you can smash bricks with what has personally become my favorite method – the trackpad.”
Why does BlackBerry think that bringing back this old-timey game is a winning proposition? Largely because it sees a lot of nostalgia out there for classic 8-bit mobile games.
“Classic games have resurged over the past half decade, with indie developers creating modern games with that retro 8-bit feel,” the company explains. “Minecraft is but one example, but a quick web search will yield results ranging from the 80s-inspired pixel art subgenre to the viral so-addictive-it-was-removed-by-the-publisher Flappy Bird game. Even the makers of Angry Birds have slung themselves onboard with the recent release of Retry. Clearly, classic games such as BrickBreaker are 100% on-trend.”
Between the return of Brick Breaker and bringing back old-school trackpads and function keys on the BlackBerry Classic, BlackBerry has ensured that its users will never have to leave 2007 again.
